How to buy a GTR?

This is gonna sound really stupid. I've only ever owned one car in my life. I walked in the dealership, negotiated, and bought it. So maybe buying a high-end AMG is different.

I went to my local Mercedes dealership the other day to inquire about an AMG GTR and the salesman said I couldn't really buy one... That it's not like you can order one and pay for it and... done. They said that only so many dealerships in the country have "dibs" on one. And there's no way of knowing whether or not they would be on that list, so to speak.

So, as a consumer how do I order one? Are certain dealerships prioritized over others? This isn't the Edition 50 or anything. Just the regular production model. I assumed I could just spec out the options I want and hand the guy a check and call it a day.

You can cetainly contact multiple dealers and get in line for an allocation. They may or may not need a deposit from you. You would want to ask how many people are on the waiting list and what your spot is. You can probably get on a list with a chance to buy at msrp.

OR you can wait a bit. these cars will hit showrooms in October maybe...

In December if any of them are sitting in showrooms they will easily be acquired below msrp.

Thanks for the info. I figure if I'm gonna drop this kind of cash on a car, I'd want to order it spec'd just how I want it rather than getting one off the showroom that may or may not have the options I want. I was hoping to be able to spec one out. I'll contact a few other dealers in the area for sure.

Good luck. It's a limited production vehicle . Less than 2000/ world wide. My dealer is number 3 dealer in Us and they were allotted ONE GTR. It wa sold . It hasn't come in yet.

ive been waiting for an allocation on a GTS since June . No build date yet and I put down a deposit on daybof build . There was one person in front of me, I'm next build allocation .

The GTRs have been sold out I believe but there may be Dealers whose car have not gone into production yet so there is still time to spec out the build.

So at what point does MB tell you you're not getting one and here's your money back? Or do they just sit on your deposit for a year with no word?

My dealer told me right away that they were not getting one so I did not put a deposit down. I am hoping to get lucky with one that was ordered(from 2 other dealers that I have a good relationship with, just further away than mine) but the owner bailed because of the cars taking so long on delivery in the U.S. and just sitting outside at port(months). I think there will be many like this.

Yeah, I get that I might find one on a lot somewhere because the person who ordered it bailed. But I'd rather not buy one that's got some wonky specs like weird colors or options. Oh well lol. I've got some inquiries out to all the dealers in my area.

One local dealer says they are an AMG Performance Center? And they said they have a few allocations but that ETA is end of 2018. That's more than a year away. Does that make sense?

Yes I've actually heard the same thing for multiple people who have tried to get allocations seems it's about a year wait now. Great reviews have certainly put this car at the top of supercar buying list for many enthusiasts. But my question to you is where did you get this 2000 number from? I heard it was 4000 I was wondering where these details are coming from that's actually less than the GT 3 RS numbers. With the performance of this car and the rarity his car could actually go up in value I can't imagine anyone reselling this at MSRP

I've been calling around. It's all over the place in terms of availability. One dealer said I can order no problem—3 month wait. Another says impossible to get, can't order them, none available ever. Another dealer says they only build one a year per dealer (total BS). I found two dealers that have production slots open. And one or two that have cars available but they are at the port waiting for approval. Every dealer wants 25K-30K above MSRP, except one. That one says it's their policy to never sell over MSRP. But they are the ones with a year wait. The last place I called says they can get me in 1st in line for a production build. 3 months for delivery. But they wouldn't give me a price. Seems weird. Said they can't give a price until I come in to drive the car off the lot. Seems like a bait and switch waiting to happen.

My dealer shows one on their website as "in transit". My salesman, the amg specialist, says it's at the port.

Fourty6,

face it. A lot of people want it. A lot of people ordered it long ago. Production is slow .

if you want one, stand in the back of the line since you were late to get to the party. There are lots of people ahead of you.

If you dont don't want to wait, there are other choices: Porsche, R8, McLaren. If you buy one off the lot that is. Otherwise , custom build is a wait on those too.

Yes, I understand. I'm just perplexed by the different stories I'm getting from each dealer. Like one telling me they can order it no problem and I can have one built in 3 months and another telling me no dealer can do that and MB limits each dealer to one car per year?

You're just getting the educated guesses of various dealers/salesmen. I am in the southeast and there are several unsold GTRs sitting at the VPCs waiting for release. It took no effort to source several being sold at MSRP. I ended up ordering as I couldn't find the options I wanted. I also didn't want a car that had been sitting outside for months.

The initial release was allocated based on each dealer. Some got none and some got several. As for current build allocations, that entirely depends on each specific dealer. I am fairly certain that MB is not assigning build dates for US bound cars until the initial batch have been released from the VPCs. This was confirmed by my dealer's AMG rep.

The truth is that any dealer that is taking your order is only providing an estimate on the delivery date. We should have a better idea once the initial cars are finally released.

That makes sense. So if a dealer tells me their AMG rep says they have a build slot open right now, you think maybe that's the dealer blowing smoke up my ***?

I guess it's no skin off my back to put a deposit down as it's refundable. But yes, I'm in the same boat as you were. It's NOT limited. Journalists touted in the beginning that it was limited to 2000 and that information is false, Mercedes and AMG have never claimed that figure and never said it was limited. Even right now in Germany, anyone can place an order for a GTR (atm it's about an 8 month wait).

This is what I remember as well. If there is demand, MBZ will make the car and exceed the original stated number. Its not a limited production car but it sure feels like it right now as they are all held up. A local Benz chapter had a car show in Long Beach and they toured the VPC on Saturday; my buddy said he saw over 50 GTR's just sitting.

Some folks here have voiced feelings of trepidation about their car sitting at the VPC for so long. For example, tires going bad from sitting, oil/gas gumming up, oxidation from being over/near water for so long. I assume the VPC are like giant warehouses? I wish someone snapped a photo of 50 GTR sitting there. That'd be cool to see for sure!

EDIT: Oh... Google to the rescue. Mercedes VPC:

Yeah, and who knows the status of the ones that were sitting in Florida, flooding?

NOPE No GTR's in there...

I would bet BMW outsourced their VPC work to Mercedes.

I still say The White House needs to hire these Mercedes people. Absolutely NO LEAKS for over 6 months now.

I asked my buddy about pics during their tour and he told me they were strict about taking photos. But, he thinks someone may have snapped a few. Let me see if I can get a hold of them.

This is what my local MB New Car Sales Manager told me:

They have two sold cars built and sitting at the VPC. Until those cars are delivered, they can only speculate as to how many and when they will get more allocations. He's hopeful that his third order will be able to be placed as soon as he receives the two cars from the VPC, but until that time it's a waiting 'game' both for the dealers and prospective buyers.

These VPCs are more like parking lots rather than warehouses. The Brunswick and Baltimore VPCs are essentially uncovered. The buildings are there to perform whatever needs to be done to the vehicles prior to delivery but a vast majority of the cars are in the elements. Could they give special treatment to the GTRs? Maybe, but I wouldn't bet on it.

See below for the Baltimore and Brunswick VPCs.
