Road & Track PCOTY: AMG GTR wows at the Track

After three weeks of ownership, the GTR continues to impress me more and more. But apparently I’m not the only one. Check out Road and Track Performance Car of the Year test. The GTR pulls off a heck of a time at the track against some stiff competition. Very impressive! Just for the record The Porsche 991.2 GT3 was a manual.

What is the time for the GTS? Does anyone have it from a previous year maybe?

I assumed it would be 720S all the way, destroying every other car in head-to-head testing.

pretty amazing results for the AMG boys! From everything I’ve seen and read the stock 720s is actually putting out closer to 780-800HP and weighs more than 400 lbs less so it absolutely runs away on the straights. For the GTR to make up that much time in the corners and actually finish 1.5 seconds earlier on a relatively short track is nothing short of astonishing!

Great performance by the GT R.

Tires make a big difference on the track. The Michelin Cup2 on the AMG and particularly the Pirelli Trofeo R on the Lambo are significantly better on track than the Pirelli PZero Corsa which were on the 720S. I'm pretty sure the 720S would have been the quickest on Trofeo R tires. That said it is of course reasonable to test the cars with the OEM tires.

And McLaren sandbagged the specifications on the 720S to protect P1 owners, it is both lighter and more powerful than claimed. One owner weighed @ 3050 lbs on the track scale with 1/8th tank fuel + 5 gal of 100 octane. Several customer cars have dyno tested at 691-698 rear wheel HP, which would imply at least 800 HP at the crank factoring in typical DCT and rear diff losses. And it's shockingly fast in the 1/4 mi...

Fastest track time in that test, yet in the final ranking, the GTR didn't make the top 4 (Camaro, Honda Civic Type R, Lexus LC500, and McLaren 720s). Yeah, you read that correctly. A Honda Civic and a Lexus beat out the AMG GTR according to Road & Track. I can see the 720S being there at the top, along with the Performante. But the GTR should be there too and not a Honda Civic or a Camaro or a Lexus. But I guess they were trying to pick one car from each sub category or something? Even so, the GTR takes a dump on the Camaro in my opinion.

The Civic should have been knocked out of the top 4 just based on looks alone, with its tumors and carbuncles popping out all over the place... not sure what the design team was thinking.

These journalists love to award cars that are more affordable. This is why the civic, Miata, suburb wrx, etc are so overrated. Many of them feel like there is no reason to need anything other than a Porsche 911. Anything that costs more is a waste.

I saw a white one in my neighorhood the other day... the part I don't get is that many of the vents are fake?? I understand if the Civic Si had fake vents to make it look like a Type R more... but why would you have fake vents on your top of the line performance cars?

Honestly I believe that Honda and Acura lost the plot years ago. Their cars have the most awful styling, even if the underlying engineering is sound. Well apart from Honda using a CVT transmission in the Accord. Yuch!! lol

Yea I mean, I grew up in that hot import world.. I had a prelude, RSX type S ( one of the dumber things as I was deciding between a integra Type R and a RSX-S).. and almost got an S2000 before getting a Supra.. the 2 mitsu Evo's I had, the Nissan GTR.. but I had an NSX on my wall (plus a Ferrari F40 and a Senna F1 car/poster).. you see people buying a pristine used 99 Civic Si (no miles on the B16) for over $20k...

To see the NSX now, plus the entire Acura lineup...eesh...

Not to mention how bad Honda is doing with their F1 engines... its all sad to see

I just bought a new SQ5. There are beautiful exhaust outlets in the lower valence. Totally fake.

Yea thats true.. lot of cars (including MB's) have those fake exhaust tips.. don't know why those bother me so much less than those huge fake inlets on the typeR.. The 1st fake exhaust tips I hated were the Lexus ISF.. maybe was the odd placement on em
