Thinking to buy a new GTR , magno paint care , want your opinions

Hi guys

First i would like to thank everyone in this forums for all the informations posted , i learned alot and still learning .

I had a 2015 amg gts Ed1 but i sold it last year , what an amazing car I had the chance to drove some super/sports cars but none of them gave this felling that i got from the gts or the gtr .

Anyways now after 1 year since i sold my gts im ready to buy the GTR , but i would like to know your opinions maybe it will help me to take my decision .

I find a good deal with a barnd new amg gtr 2019/9 fully loaded i mean it has every thing you can imagine , after i configure it online with the same specs the price was around 220k euro ( german website )

Anyways this one im talking about with 16km the price is 180k the only problem is not the new model with the big screen and the new LEd buttons like the new GT 4 door or the 2020 Gt series ,

My question is do you guy think its matter to wait and get the new model or its a sport car all those options are not necessary ?
I like technology and if i had to choose for sure i will choose the new model but i dont think i will ever find it new with that price and fully loaded , and to be honest this is the maximum budget i can spend , after the tax/ importation it will cost me around 240k euro.

My second question is regarding the paint , since it my first time i will buy a car with the matt paint , im afraid that it dont resist to scratchs like the normal paint , i heard about the ppf and i would love to install it but in my place it will be hard to find a professional garage who can do it in right way .

So do you guys think to have this green magno without a ppf is mistake ? specially im thinking to keep this car for a long time and im the kind who like to see it like day 1 for the next couple of years .

Thanks

Yes. No protection would be a huge mistake.
There are a few areas on these cars that get blasted, especially with the CUP tires.
I drove mine for about 800km and 1 track day and it had about a dozen or more small chips.
My older GTR which had about 9,000 km with full protection still had some good marks on the film from road debris.

I would at the very least do hood, front, front fenders and entire lower rockers. Should do headlights too.

I have my GHM car 100% covered. All of the painted areas with Xpel Stealth, and all the shiny black bits with Xpel Ultimate. I would never drive one of the matte coloured cars without PPF protection.

Thank you guys for the answers ,

Ok Without the ppf is a mistake .

So For the first question what do you think regarding the difference in the old/new model .

Shall i wait until i get the new one or it doesn't matter ?
Also for the price 180k euro is a good price for a full loaded amg gtr in green magno or i can find even 2020 model with the same options at this cost .

I believe the price now for a brand new GTR ( old model ) are cheaper ,so maybe in 2020 face lift GTR will not be possible to find it less than 210k euro with the same options ,

its true or im wrong ?

Thanks

As a Magno owner, I third the above about it needing protection. It is a softer paint, nearly impossible to fix chips in, and the body panels are such that the areas right behind the wheels get blasted.

As far as waiting for a newer model, I would not advise it personally. The touchpad only infotainment control on the new cars is terrible in comparison to the twist knob/touch pad combo, and the dials on the steering wheel feel cheap and flimsy.

I wanted the latest tech in my car, and originally I wanted a car with the digital dash and digital buttons and controls. I’d say if it’s a car you plan to keep less than 5 years and move on to something else, the latest tech is nice/neat to have. But as I’ve thought about it, I think having traditional analog gauges will age better like a well crafted time piece. I love my GTR enough that I think I’ll be keeping this for a long time so I’m happy to have the analog controls.

Personal opinion, I think a mango GTR next to a glossy GTR: The mango just sets the car apart, looks intriguing and very sharp. It really accentuates the Iines and allows the finishes and different details to stand out. It is a "higher" maintenance paint. I did Xpel ppf of the entire car. Some of the rear bumper nooks and crannies I left alone. It allows the paint to be trouble free. The glossy is indeed standard care and easier to repair, but glossy just gets lost in a sea of glossy cars. I also did the headlights. I intend on keeping the car indefinitely as I have no interest in where Merc and a lot of cars are going. Plus CA regulations just got worse.

As far as the gauges, I love the analog gauges. The car carries over a little "old school" brute with this. Plus I didn't feel like dealing with software glitches or screen issues. I just wanted raw tachymeters. Plus I think the steering wheel mouse pads are ridiculous and over the top overkill.

Either way its a personal preference. Congrats on whatever you get....

I think the 180k deal is fair and I’m glad to see a dealer price the car without a premium on msrp. GHM is an excellent color but if you look on the used market, you’ll find that color to be quite common. Perhaps you may be able to leverage this.

The electric bits on the 2020 are pretty cool if that’s what you’re into. But it’s kinda like the new iphone11...I wouldn’t upgrade as I don’t find those tidbits to confer a huge advantage or premium in the used market to my predictions. Some people love the purist approach, others are early adopters and like the new tech.

Don’t buy the car until you’re ready to buy the ppf as soon as you take delivery. If you want the car to stay looking like new with a color like GHM, you can’t complain about spending 8-10k to wrap it professionally. I have a white GTR and am thankful everyday I chose to install it along with the clearplex on the windshield....I also use gloves for my steering wheel but I’m neurotic and have really sweaty hands.

Good luck !

I had a 2018 GTR and currently have a 2020 GTR (PRO).
Loving my Magno paint on the 2020. Makes the car look mean AF.
I did have a preference for the analog gauges until I had a chance experience the digital dash. When digital dashes first came out and I am coming from the BMW world, I did not like at all.
But I must say Mercedes did a pretty good job with their dash, it does keep some of the traditional round gauge style, and you are able to display much more information which I really like.
Also the changes in the infotainment system is a big improvement but this is more of a novelty than a necessity. Nice to have. Of course there is the Track Pace software which I have played with a bit and have done some logging but just pretty basic stuff for now.
I was able to order my car with the traditional round knob and not the touch pad. Had the hybrid knob/touch pad in my BMW and did not like at all.

A cheap '18 is a far better deal over a new '20.

AMG GT 43 4-door coupé
I have also just got a magno blue 4-door and also had the same question about protecting it. Finally I did a full Xpel protection, and have just drove through four hours of hard rain in Switzerland, and now have completed it’s first hand wash. No complaints so far, I think it was a great decision, but hand washing it is still a pain.
I’m a fan of the latest technology and looks, so go with new model if you can. I’m not convinced that analog is better or will sell better later on. And the two 12” screen are really good.
With only 900 km on the clock my wife and I are still under it’s charm.

I heard the new 2020 models have a much quieter exhaust due to restrictions, so I would take that into account. Apparently its much more muffled.

I’m also debating between a 2019 with a big discount or a 2020 at MSRP (or close to). No one is charging premiums anymore in Canada.

The big issue with the new dash is they ruined the aesthetics of the center console by changing the round knobs! The whole point was that it looked like a V8 with the knobs as cylinders! The rectangles look stupid, since there are round elements everywhere else, and the console no longer resembles a V8.
Also, most of the controls are unnecessary since you have the steering wheel controls; which I agree feel very cheap, since the entire pod moves when you rotate it or push a button.
And the starter button has moved to the conventional location by the steering wheel, which is not as exotic as on the V8 console.

However, the lack of Apple CarPlay on the 2019 and no front camera is unfortunate, but not a deal breaker.

I do like the digital screens but they will date faster than the analogue, that’s for sure.

I assumed the AMG GT was safe, but as per a thread on this forum about an AMG GTR PRO, the owner commented the exhaust was more mute than his older GTR. He said it might just be because the car is a track focused.

Then I came across this guy on reddit (Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/commen..._all_week_ama/)
He commented "This GT's biggest disappointment is that it's quiet at low speeds, even with max exhaust settings. The GT doesn't belt AMG notes until you slam on the gas, and by the time it sings, you're breaking the law. By contrast, the BULLITT Mustang I tested last week sounded amazing all the time, with four very distinct exhaust settings to the GT's two."
The reddit guy might not know what he is talking about, but haven driven my 2018 - I would not call the exhaust disappointing or mute at the slightest. So I assume maybe the 2020 model facelift is muted.

Take this all with a grain of salt, however, as I have not heard a 2020 myself to confirm. So I'm just speculating.

Well could it be the Particulate Filters? If so, these should not be on US/Canadian cars; but that needs to be confirmed.

Im quite sure the article was referencing the OPFs for the EU market. I haven’t read anything for the US market but I’m sure CA would love to enforce that one.

I've got the digital dash on my 2019 C63s and it's the best bit. Just looking at the GTR's and they're all analogue unless I buy brand new, so looks like I'll wait for them to hit the second hand market. Not sure I can go back to analogue now.

Can the digital dash be retrofitted?

The steering wheel buttons are solid and well made, none of them move (flex) on my wheel! Invisible the new rotary and push button mode selectors.

The steering wheel buttons that move on the 2020 are the mode rotary dial and the 2 custom selector switches. It’s unfortunate.

my problem with the 2020 is the console switches. It ruins the aesthetics of an otherwise perfect design.

Personally I like the revamped console. I like the clean look, only problem is the finger prints.

Back to the exhaust, yes it is much quieter.. below 3500 RPM. Above that, it sings.
While the new exhaust is quieter, I do like the tone of the new (above 3500 RPM) more than the old.
