I'm taking my GTR in this morning for the differential change at 2,445 miles. They are telling me $692.00 + tax. I will post a pic of the receipt/invoice later today when I get it back. I'm going to question why it's so much compared to what I've heard posted on here. They did have to order some parts and "special" fluid they said.

‘The ‘parts’ are washers for the drain/fill bolts and the ‘special’ fluid is the normal DCT oil.

If you could, post the service part of your invoice that shows the service code, time to do the job and parts used. Hard to believe it would be so expensive. The DCT change is more time consuming and uses a lot of fluid, but I would have thought the diff service would be much less than what they quoted you. Also ask them if they know why this is a required service on the GT R and not the GT S. I'm curious.

Claude, could you clarify something for me?

Are there different oils for the differential and the DCT itself, meaning totally separate systems, or is it a shared oil/cooling system?

TIA,

Bish

Okay it's done. I did get a discount and pay only $692 - lucky me. There are two separate systems that need to be drained and filled. It is the same DCT fluid. Also, basically the same trans-axle as the GT. He said most likely because of the increased HP and Torque that MB wants this done to be sure all is okay. It was also pretty labor intensive as well. He had to remove the rear diffuser, in addition there was a brace and some other things in the way specific to the GTR that had to be removed just to get to one of the drain plugs.

Looks like they did the standard service for a 4 year/40,000 mile GT S service at the 2k mile point since they changed not just the diff fluid but the transmission fluid as well. That explains the cost.

A quick search shows that the transmission fluid, MB part 989 86 03 09 is a Shell dual clutch transmission fluid also specified for Ferrari. Shell TF DCT-F3 that meets Mercedes spec 236.25 and appears to be sold in 20 litre containers

The gear oil for the diff is MB part 989 87 03 09 is a Shell GL-5 gear oil, Shell Spirax S5 ATE that meets Mercedes spec 236.26 and is a 75W-90 gear oil also in 20 litre pails

Here is a list of specs required for DCT fluids and products used in various cars.

Spec on the Shell Spirax S5 ATE
http://tdc.ge/wp-content/uploads/201...ATE_75W-90.pdf

Both fluids are specified for Getrag transaxles.

Seems it is different in different parts of the world, I do have a sticker in the same location but it only talks about break in and my first service is scheduled at 15k kilometers as per the manual and information system.

HEY YOU GTR/GTC GUYS THAT GOT DUPED BY YOUR DEALER INTO CHANGING YOUR DIFFERENTIAL FLUID BECAUSE IT WAS REQUIRED NEED TO GO BACK AND REQUEST A REFUND.

This service isn’t required until 20k miles for us. The GT/GTAand GTS may be another matter.

If you are in doubt ask them to show you when it is required in their MB Service Manual.

If you just wanted it done that’s another matter.

Regards

Jerry,

It is noted on the supplement stuck to the upper left windshield that the diff oil has to be changed at 3,000 km’s, or 1,850 miles.

I have a copy of the required MB Service schedule and I talked with my dealer since I am at the mileage to have it done. They say “NO” . I am all for several of us “double checking” to be sure.

Do you happen to know who’s green GTR that windshield sticker and invoice came from (yours)?

Best regards

Just because an individual MB dealership states it's not required, doesn't actually mean it's not required. We all know that.

MB dealer in question is owned by Mercedes Benz. It’s also an MB museum and experience centre.

Jerry,

I took that additional maintenance sticker off of the inside of my windshield when I received the car and placed it on a piece of paper so that I wouldn't forget about the break-in requirements: Engine below 4,000 rpm for 1,000 miles; vary speeds; no 'kick-down'; drive in 'C' mode, etc. The second (lower) part of that sticker specifically made reference to the requirements of the gearbox/rear diff oil being changed at 3,000 kms (1,850 miles). I will attempt to find it as my better half seems to have moved it somewhere! lol

We all know that there are times that informed owners on forums such as this know a specific maintenance requirement, especially if it's an update or a new recommendation on a new vehicle, prior to the dealership SA's knowing.

My car was a pretty late build in 2017; October to be precise. Perhaps the earlier builds last year didn't have that supplementary sticker on the inside of the window? I do know that all of us need to have confirmation of this from MB itself, and not from a dealership. Regardless since I'll be tracking mine, I'm getting done.

Bish

I have a copy of my service ticket further up in this thread. The shop foreman said it doesn't show in the MB system as a required (scheduled) maintenance. However, he said with that sticker affixed to the window. He said he would definitely do it and I agreed (has to be there for a reason). Many say yes and many say no on this topic. To err on the side of caution, it can't hurt anything to do it other than your wallet.

the bishman benzbell:

I thank you guys very much for the information. I agree and think MB corporate should provide an official answer for us all. Going out of pocket for a unnecessary service at the price they are talking about is ridiculous UNLESS as Bish mentions he is going to track his car and wants it done.

SUGGESTION: Bish put those stickers inside your owners manuel on the back page. That way you can find them later. I have the upper sticker regarding engine break in just not the differential change.

FWIW: I posted the same question on the AMG Private Lounge and requested some assistance in obtaining an answer......Waiting.

Hey. I just noticed only the green GTR’s have a differential change sticker............

Regards

Jerry

I second that. I understand the GHM is lighter than the other paints. In all seriousness. I think we should get to the bottom of this. Whether, it is a required service or not. If not - I'd like my $700 reimbursed. If this is indeed a flub on MB's part.

It seems plausible that all GTR/GTC’S built from startup to possibly the mid October/November time frame did not have the differential service windshield sticker. All builds after that may have it.

For sure it isn’t in the early GTR Owners Manual as referenced on the sticker. The question may be is it in the later owners manual. When you guys get a chance, see if it’s in your manual.

FWIW; FROM THE AMG PL CHIEF EDITOR WHO HAS A EARLY DELIVERY GTR.

My build is 9/17. I can't find anywhere in the owners or service manual that makes mention of this. I also was right next to the shop foreman when he pulled it up on the MB computer system (whatever it's called) and it only mentioned it at 40k miles. Once I showed him the window sticker, then he said you should do it because of the affixed sticker saying so.
