AMG GT/GTS The GT/GT S is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG. Its front mid-engine design with a rear transaxle, the use of aluminium lightweight construction and its newly developed AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine underscores the hallmark of AMG driving performance.

Is it a supercar?

Hello fellas,
I'm curious as to how y'all view your cars. Do you consider them supercars? Does it depend on the trim (ie: gt/s are not, but gtr is)?
I'm coming over from an f type r, which is not commonly seen as a supercar, but is nearly there in terms of performance. I'm wondering how the gt is classified... What are your views on this matter?

2017 GT
It is a well rounded sports car that can hang with or beat supercars with a simple tune.
IMHO a supercar is a car that is now in the 1/4 million $ range and up and is usually a week end warrior to keep mileage down.

ask professional drivers, Bernd Maylander, He said the AMG GT was the best sports car he has ever driven.

Theres another line between supercar and high performance car that have blurred in the last 2-3 years. 250$k and above.

McLaren doesn't want to talk about their new 720s @ 250$ at being faster and more compliant than their P1 that was @ 1.2 $ large 2 years ago.

This AMG GT is evolving fast as well. The GT and GTS are incredible go fast Cars with high limits. You want a 600/600 car ?? So easy now.

The GTR is a technological marvel and is going to be fast on all tracks. I think that caught a lot of guys by surprise at 160k.

Good question ...... what it is, or isn't, in the eye of its beholder.

All I'll add is that this car blurs the boundaries more than any other I've owned.

I considered it along side a 580-2 and R8v10, which I believe everyone would classify as junior supercars.

.... but for me its a GT!

Couldn't have said it better, it's definitely in between being a sports car crossing into super car.

I considered a 570S but the sound and feeling of the GT just got to me. I'd describe it as a sports car that can outperform a few junior supercars. I also believe there is a different look associated with being a supercar (think silouette of a Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren, Pagani etc), and in that aspect the GT is more livable.

You'll never go anywhere discreetly when driving a McLaren (and will spend half of your time explaining that it isn't a Ferrari or a Lambo ), the GT is better in that regard. People will look, connoisseurs will drool, but no one will behave like a spaceship just landed. Mostly

Yes, spot on - look and attention are two very significant factors in any bonafide supercar

..... also, I've noticed a strange trend - 580-2, R8v10 and AMG GT......

Not a supercar. I drive mine to Home Depot and to work and to pick my kid up.

Supercars are either to impractical or too deprecistion sensitive to do the same.

Aventadors are supercars.

my friend asked me what was my favorite restaurant, I told him, (this old place that he probably never had been to). He quoted off a couple of big name places because of this and that and why he considered them to be the best in town.
I told him I only consider the food , and nothing else. I dont care anything about the restaurant, or anybody that goes there. I just consider the quality of the food.
Same with cars, I just consider how it feels to me, how it performs for me. How it is compared to anything else I have ever driven. Its just a perception or an opinion.

Interesting responses. Thanks!
Seems everyone agrees it isn't a supercar due to a combination of reasonable price, practicality, and non-outlandish appearance. Almost makes me wonder why anyone would want a supercar

For caffeine and octane of course

I believe it's the need for someone to show the ROW that they have something you don't lol. To each his own, but I agree with the restaurant analogy.

You could try the f type. It's quite the head turner
I agree though, going from a great sports car to a supercar is paying double the price for very little return. Hence my interest in a more lateral move to the gt.
I'll say this though... A lambo, Ferrari, and r8 are the only options for a v10-12 n/a engine. That's not worth a quarter million to me, but should my finances change, I could be swayed...

ferrari 458 spider
i would classify it as a sports car not super car. like a middle of the road porsche.

it lacks the exclusivity (and higher price) of what i would consider an exotic supercar. AMG could have gone with that route but it's lower volume and ultimately not what they were after. sharing parts with other mercedes and the engine as well really diluted the mystique for me.

by all accounts it is one of the best twin turbo V8s out there, performance, sound, etc. but they just made it too mainstream to be a supercar. the numbers are there just not the exclusivity.

I would say not quite a supercar, but every time I drive the car the cars around me are taking pictures and recording me with their smart phones.

Not a supercar. But maybe the best damn sports car that even a CPA could love. And as others have implied, it really should make some supercar owners question the marginal value of their spend.

I'm currently cross shopping Gen2 R8s, although I've mostly decided on a GTs. Hard to justify the extra 40% premium for the R8.

I found a way to justify (personally of course)... The R8 V10 is incredible and in fact, compliments the GTS in so many ways. But yes the pricing is that much more. I guess Im still a sucker for a V10 normally aspirated ripper that has an exotic appeal yet can be daily driven if needed.

Here are a few sensible reasons:
no memory seats in the R8
gas mileage much worse with Audi NA engine
slower compared to a tuned GT

LOL, you know so much...

There is memory on the seats but its via the key fob (it remembers the last setting based on the key usage.

If you can afford the car, you can afford the gas or one is just fooling themselves.

A tuned non plus will beat a tuned GTS (I have both and since you brought that up LOL) as it actually bumps over the Plus. But stock vs stock we know what is the faster car too LOL. Tuned cars are gaining about 90 crank awd hp. Does a tuned GT or GTS out trap a Lambo Huracan or a V10 plus stock?

There is always something faster and better but the sound of the V10 sells it for me... and while the grunt of the hot V8 is great it just doesn't compare IMHO.

I'm not that interested in outright speed any more. Technically both cars have less power than My CTS-V wagon (speaking of bad gas mileage...lol).

I'd love to get a Gen2 R8 non-plus. But even the used ones on the market will likely be out of my budget range. I'd likely have to wait until the fall to see if I could make the numbers work.
