Durability if OEM Carbon fiber exterior trim

I ordered Night Style exterior package for my solarbeam yellow GTS. I was considering changing the trim to OEM Carbon fiber package.

Does the clear coat finish hold up? Will the carbon fiber lip and diffuser be prone to rock and gravel chips? Am I just over thinking it?

I don't know. I have chosen night package on all of my amg's. Congratulations on the order though. I absolutely love the yellow gts. One thing for sure is that the yellow paint is going to definitely hide swirls.

I was concerned that the black mirrors would show swirls. The rear diffuser is pretty. I just don't want it to look like sh*t after some chips.

CF is clear coated just like any other paint, but CF does fade to greenish color after yrs of direct sun. If you leave the car out all the time the CF will fade

Green? Is that just the surface oxidation if not treated? I don't want green contrasting trim on my car.

Is the standard diffuser polyurethane ?

will the Night package be more durable than CF?

The OE carbon is very high quality. Like any auto paint surface, ther are not bullet proof. You can put Ceramic Pro Coating or PPF to protect your carbon goodies.

If you want to keep your carbon clear coat shine, put wax on the clear coat monthly keep the uv light out.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Best,

Is the CF just as susceptible to injury as the gloss black parts at those locations, i.e. Diffuser

I am not 100% certain about the GTC (although I am fairly sure) but on the GTS the diffuser is mainly a textured plastic. With the night pack the silver "highlight" strip is changed to black gloss. With this in mind a C/F rear diffuser will be more susceptible to wear than a car with a standard night pack.

However, personally, it wouldn't stop me going with C/F although I don't usually keep my cars more than a year or two.

In other areas - well you are probably a little more likely to see damage on gloss black than on laquered CF because you see every single tiny scratch and swirl on anything gloss black!

Many people like to put paint protection film on the cf or gloss black trim.

PPF is a great way to protect your investment.

Yes, CF turns to greenish, fade when its exposed to constant, prolonged sun light. Maybe a clear bra will help somewhat. But if you want to play around with the expensive, exotic materials on expensive sports cars, like CF youre supposed to be rich enough to replace it if you have to
Try asking MB if your warranty covers CF when it fades.

I'm prepared to treat, repair or replace the trim. I just want something which will "last " longer between treatments.

If CF is better at hiding swirl and is reasonably durable, I'm all over it.

Wrap it! Definitely the best way to protect the carbon fiber.

I've seen 3M, Xpel and ceramic coating. It seems Xpel is the best. Does it yellow?

I've had Xpel and Suntek on a few cars. Neither have yellowed. My RS6 and GTS have Suntek on the bonnet and Xpel on the front bumper and arches.

Its hard to answer, black paint is paint, cf has clear coat so its still paint. Anything can chip any paint. the only thing worse about cf is if you break or crack it, you have to replace it. with the painted part you just fix it.
