How to buy a GTR?
#26
The exception it seems is the Long Beach VPC which has a higher fraction of covered square footage relative to the surrounding lots. The entire facility also seems smaller as well so I don't know if there are offsite storage areas not contiguous with the main facility.
This seems to jive with the anecdotal evidence that the GTRs are being held indoors at the Long Beach facility.

Photo came from an article about Mercedes investing more in importation into the US and beefing up their VPCs. Could be a stock photo or could be that different manufacturers share warehouse space.
I definitely wouldn't want a $200,000 car sitting in an uncovered parking lot for 4 months. Man, I'd be livid.

from my contact about the pictures at the Long Beach VPC-
I wish. They were very strict on watching folks with cameras and phones. They wanted no pics. One of the guys took one on So Cal AMG lounge but has since removed it. I went back a fewer hours later to get a screen grab. It was crazy.

Ok looks like I might have found an open build allocation. Pretty close to MSRP for all intents and purposes. It's at a dealer down in SOCAL (I'm in SF). Build date is sometime in November if I'm to believe the salesman. Hopefully it's an actual confirmed build and not just a "we'll put the order in and maybe they'll allocate it." But the dealer says it's a legit confirmed build.

Yes I can tell you with almost certainty that's a lot of nonsense you'll never get one in three months as a new build. I've heard minimum next fall
Yes, I understand. I'm just perplexed by the different stories I'm getting from each dealer. Like one telling me they can order it no problem and I can have one built in 3 months and another telling me no dealer can do that and MB limits each dealer to one car per year?

Just to give some insight (for my case)
My order and deposit was given to MB dealership Early April 2017......I was advised of allocation for the build to take place in August 2017. My dealer advised me delivery looks like Sept. 29, 2017 and gave me my VIN #.
So this whole process is a wait.......but in my opinion WELL WORTH IT

In canada, at least, in ON/BC, cars are not allowed to sell over MSRP, but other provinces and for sure many states in the US are allowed to have "market adjustment" added to the MSRP.

It's NOT limited. Journalists touted in the beginning that it was limited to 2000 and that information is false, Mercedes and AMG have never claimed that figure and never said it was limited. Even right now in Germany, anyone can place an order for a GTR (atm it's about an 8 month wait).

Just put a deposit down. Dealer says they have a build slot guaranteed. I'm taking that promise with a grain of salt. But I should know definitively in a few days according to the dealer. Deposit is refundable, so no risk as far as I can tell.

So this is the email I just got about the "guaranteed allocation" the dealership said they had:
"Spoke to Mercedes. You are in line. We don’t have an actual completion build date as of yet. However, Your Gt-R is in line. I would allow a few months."
What does this mean? I've replied asking for a Purchase Order Number and/or a Production Build Number (VIN). But it sounds like the dealer told me they had an allocation to get my deposit. And they've just requested a build from Mercedes but they don't actually have one yet. If that's the case I'm getting a refund. I don't like being lied to.

It’s the same shi(r)t here. When I ordered my GTS in June, they told me my order was accepted by MB. They of course took my $5000 deposit.
When i I called about the PO Number, they told me I was on line for an allocation . This went on till mid Sept when I finally got a build date of 12/20.
So 7 months from order to build. And that’s for a lowly GTS

Bit of an update. I'm getting a bad vibe here.
After the last message about "spoke to MB, you are in line..." I asked for written confirmation. A PO number, a production build number... something. Other than a strange text message. This is what I got back:
Your car is in line to be finalized. We are waiting for a production date from the factory. I have sent the inventory Manager an email asking what the expected dates will be. Sorry for the delay. I promise you are ahead of most. You have a slot.
I then asked for something official in writing. Again. And Again I got a a response kind of deflecting and giving me the run-around:
Just confirmed with the GM. You have a slot. Car is ordered. Will be here in about 3 months. Will keep you posted.
I then said, ok so now that the car is officially ordered, how about something official in writing. PO from Netstar with all the vehicle/specs/options and dealer/rep/customer info. The response?
Sure, when I get in [to the office]
A few days later I get another message:
Spoke to the GM. You have a spot. He did it himself.
Wait, I thought I had a confirmed allocation like a month ago... Something doesn't feel right. So I ask again: "How about that Netstar stuff and a PO#?
What PO # are you talking about? Yes, it's in Netstar.
I immediately call the dealership to speak with the General Manager. But I'm told he isn't there and won't be there for like a week. I then get a text from the salesman with some photos of the original order sheet showing the original specs of the car (before I put a deposit down and changed the specs, presumably). So I say hey these specs aren't the car I ordered.
We know. They will be corrected. Don't worry. This is just your order slot. Don't stress. You are good. Everyone knows about your car here including the inventory manager and communication between here and the manufacturer.
What?! WTF does this mean? Am I just a complete noob to buying a freakin' car or what? I'd think that I'd get like... you know... something in writing show the car I ordered. Showing my deposit. Show the dealer's info and my info. And showing the order is confirmed, accepted, and allocated. But instead I get a bunch of weird vauge texts...
The deposit is supposedly refundable. So I'll wait it out and see what happens. But I this is strange.

Having been dealing with ordering I can say this.
The dealer can look into the future and see if they have allocation of a certain car that is not even built yet but is assigned to that dealer.
There is a window of time that the dealer can make modifications to this allocation. The dealer can assign a customer’s name right on the allocation list that means nothing other than the fact that this customer has dibs. If not interested at any point, this name can be removed or changed.
You should be able to see your name on their allocation list and have access to the print out of the so called build sheet if you truely have a car on order. The ability to assign a customer’s name to an allocation is previlaged, so the average salesperson cannot. Usually a real sales manager or the GM. Now the GM is not going to agree to put names on his cars because his sales team say so. There has to be a level of confidence that the customer will move forward when the car comes. This is usually via a deposit or multiple purchases and loyalty. However, there’s a chance for multiple deposits kept for the same car! If the dealer is not transparent about the car you want to order, that may be the reason. Grr in particular cannot be ordered with weird options like pink interior etc, so the dealer shouldn't need to swing this as they are able to sell their car if there’s a fall out. Why do they keep multiple buyers on hook for the same car? I think it is at the salesperson level where they want to keep their customer interested and committed without actually having the ability to assign an actual allocation to that customers. Hope this helps.

I put a £1000 deposit down to get a "spot" on a waiting list last month. According to my dealer the spot is registered as "an interest" with Mercedes Benz. I have an order form for a rough spec which is just to get an order onto their system. When and IF a car becomes available in the pipeline then, if I'm next on the list, I will be required to put a £20k further deposit down to commit to the order and spec the car properly.
In the UK there are currently no cars in the pipeline at all but the general manager at the dealer believes there will be another tranch of cars next year. I can get the deposit back at any time and in fact I originally placed it on a GTR Black edition which looks like it will be a few years away so I moved it onto a standard GTR.
Hope that helps.

Its ridiculous that you are getting treated like this and spending $200K with them.

I would counsel any California-based buyer to avoid buying out of state. The California Lemon Law is significantly stronger than the similar laws in most other states. If something goes wrong with the car requiring a buy back (or other compensation), it's important the car have been bought in California. If not, and the car is subsequently serviced in California, the owner won't have California Lemon law protection.

So Keyes European (Van Nuys, CA Mercedes dealer) has a GTR for sale, And they have a place to click on the post for the car on their website to "Get Internet Pricing." Which, of course, I do. And then I get this bullship email:
The "nature of what [he] does" is to sell cars. Why does he need to "understand the goals [I am] trying to achieve" in order to give me the Internet price? What is the argle barggle about whether what he does (sell cars) is a "good fit" for "my goals" (to buy a car)? And why does how my calendar looks have anything to do with it?
I send him a curt email asking for the price or to forget about it. He hasn't responded.
Hi MalibuScott,
Thank you for inquiring about the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GTR in my inventory at Keyes Mercedes-Benz.
Considering the nature of what we do, I find it’s best to arrange a time when we can speak on the phone.
That way, I can better understand the goals you are trying to achieve. And I can ask questions to help me figure out whether or not what we do is a good fit for those goals.
How is your calendar looking next week?
Thank you,
S**** K***
