AMG GT R Spied

Figured I'd go ahead and start a thread for the upcoming GT R. From what I've read, it's supposed to break cover this summer and will be slated above the GT S but below the range topping Black Series. The car will also feature a grill with upright slats as an homage to the '52 300SL Panamericana...add some active aero, more power, a wider track, less weight, and that center-mounted exhaust and this promises to be one of the coolest cars of the year.

More spy shots here: http://www.benzinsider.com/2016/02/m...-on-cam-again/

And some footage of a prototype at the 'Ring:

Thanks for sharing!

Loving the back with the new exhaust and the rear diffuser.

I wonder if they have kept the same M178 engine.

I'm not sure what engine code they'll use (M179 perhaps?) but it seems logical that they would tune the M177/M178 for more power as opposed to reviving the old 6.2 like they did with the GT3 racer. The block on the 4.0L is built to withstand 130 bar of pressure so it should be fun to see how it evolves in future AMGs.

I'm a big fan of the rear, too. The diffuser actually looks integrated with the undercarriage to enhance airflow and increase downforce, as opposed to some cosmetic piece tacked on as an afterthought. Rumor has it they're also calibrating a 4-wheel steering system ala the 991 GT3. This is going to be one special car.

If one would be allowed to dream, could this package be priced at $145K and arrive around Xmas time so it can get on Santa's list?

It's supposed to debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer so my hunch is that deliveries could begin as early as January 2017...but at the rate MBUSA moves, we'll be lucky if they have the configurator up and running by then lol.

This could be a cool replacement for my 991 GT3!
The GTS wasnt aggressive enough for me, but this could be a great alternative

I'm fascinated by the vents just above the license plate there...I'm assuming this is an aero feature but am wondering where that air is going to be coming from to produce the downforce?

Also, looks like the side vents have grown a bit, perhaps to relieve wheel well pressure?

"Like the GT or GT S, it's not a high price level like the SLS or the SLS Black, it's a low price level and it's competitive to the competitors. This gives us a new chance to compete and to conquer as well," Moers said.

Going to be interesting to see what he means by "not a high price level." That aside, I can't wait until June to see what they've come up with.

I'd be interested in pricing info. too, if you have it.

The GT S is roughy $8,000 more than the S550 Coupe and I'm thinking that differential should hold between the R and the S63 Coupe. If I'm right, the R should be around $170K. Let's see.

Tobia Miers announce close to 600HP... Only way to do that is with bigger turbos... Even with aftermarket tune, none of the tuners are getting peak HP up to that level.

Supposedly $20k more than standard version.

Comes out in the fall

I think you could be right but I hope you are wrong as this put it in TT-RS territory. (I know that right now you can't buy one for MRSP but the hype will die soon). I will have a tough time rationalizing paying $50K more for the GT-R when the tuner can achieve the same power for $3.5K. The base GT will obviously not have the hard core look and the track prowess but $50K pays for a lot of AMG driving academies or other dedicated courses.

Agreed, tuners are already at 600 crank hp. I predict the GT R will have the same turbos and it's just the tune. MB underrated the GTS from the beginning.

Barely, and those are optimistic claims, more like 580-590. And they achieve that by maxing out the stock turbos and waste gates. Manufactures won't release a motor that close to its theoretical limits. They will run a larger turbo at lower pressure / boost for reliability reasons. Just like the new E43 has larger turbo than the New C43. So there is already precedent for larger turbos in higher models.

It also makes sense because they can use the larger turbos on the GTR at lower boost and then for 2018 crank up the boost for the 2018 GTR Black series which will be between 650-700hp (after all it has to be higher than the old 622HP SLS black)

Not sure why you think it is optimistic. Renntech is usually on the very conservative side. 548whp (tune and down pipes) equates to 644hp at 15% loss and 610hp at 10% loss. Renntech advertises 601hp on their site with tune only.
We shall see and that would be awesome if the GT R has larger turbos but my bet is that it will be the BS.

I was told 2nd quarter of 2017. Something around $160k USD.

575hp.
Same turbos, just tuned. Same power plant.

Initial reports were 550hp, Tobias just said 600, 575 would make more sense on stock turbos and tuned.

Comparing a dyno with downpipes does not count lol, we are talking stock factory numbers. 600 is a stretch, and most tuners do give optimistic wheel numbers. I am not saying 600hp is not possible. What I am saying is AMG would not release a car that is that close to its absolute limits. They always like to leave a lot of extra room on the table for reliability and safety reasons.

E43 they could have just tuned it for 30-40 more HO, but instead they out larger turbos to run them at a much lower level of stress for reliability reasons.

If it is 575 then stock turbos should be fine, which would mean the black series probably will get 650hp (putting the GTR half way between GTS and BS).

I don't think we can reason with this guy... He's right, there's no correlation between a dyno and OEM crank horsepower
