I think the GTR is going to be a GREAT car and if they limit the production it will hold value---homerun AMG.
Personally I could care less about these track times. I buy my cars for the road not the track. My turbo s is fast as he##, can be driven year round and used for long road trips. Enough said

As you say though, ring times are pretty irrelvant, I'll still be beaten around my local track by an old guy in a stripped out 964 when im driving the GTR

All the new cars are still on the 991 platform though so they're not going to be a huge leap forward. I doubt anything 991 they have coming is going to blow that time out of the water ie sub 7minutes.

This is the most complete list of official Ring lap times I can find....and FYI the 997.1 GT3 RS is quicker than the old GT2 LOTS quicker!! Nonetheless, a 7:10 is blistering quick, and faster than I expected it would be I must admit

These tracks times are nice to read about, but in the real world mean nothing to a regular guy like myself. Also, all cars are tested in different conditions by different drivers, but it doesn't surprise me that the GTR did so well. AMG really focused this car for the track and they certainly accomplished that.
Good story about the old guy

Which is coincidently quite true so far but we see that AMG does very well in short order.
Btw the same German mag in the vid also ran the 918 Spyder around the ring at 7:13, so 2 seconds slower than the AMG.
AMG is also starting to expand for the platform. Now there is a GT4 is the works, based on the GTR.
That said, if people start talking about the 911's resale value, then the focus has already shifted in AMG's favor

Impressive but doubt you can wheel a car like that lol. Name your bet, I guarantee I have more racing and track experience than you so I am not too worried and the bet still stands. $10,000 plus loser pays for track rental, is that in the ballpark of what you were thinking? hell, I will run you in a GT-S and you can run in a GT-R.....BTW, who's GT-R are you going to be driving?????

found this post on a different forum; dialogue with Sport Auto:
Ok, here are what SA said via google translate:
- This is the fastest standard vehicle that SA has tested since they started testing in 1997.
- SA did note that they had used tire warmer, since it was only 4C that day so they had to make sure the tire isn't too cold.
- the GT R is equipped with a special AMG-Track tire approved for road use. These Cup 2 tire was specially developed for the GT R and can be ordered through MB AMG department.
- Traction control was used.
- GT R has 585HP, 75 more than GT S, thanks to increased load pressure. It is far less scary than the 488 GTB they had just tested, in the GT R you feel good at using full throttle, it is well powered, not over-powered.
- Compared to the GT S, the GT R has significantly higher mechanical grip due to chassis modifications and newly developed sports tires. Especially in the slower mountain passages behind Metzgesfeld to Wehrseifen, but also from Home Acht to the Brno, the rear axle sticks on the ideal line. No unwanted lateral steps, GT R gives more confidence in the border area than any other sports car before.
- On fast sections one can also trust the GT R, on the Klostertal the GT R ran 179km/h, the 918 did 174km/h, Gumpert Apollo 174km/h, and the 488 GTB 173km/h.
- The optional ceramic brake works extremely well, it was unbelievable how late you can brake with the GT R.
- Yes, SA is fully aware of Porsche was able to ran the 918 6:57 with Marc Lieb at the helm, but as far as SA's concerned, the GT R is the fastest car they have ever tested. And also the tester could not believe the GT R is 25 seconds faster than the GT S.

I still don't understand why AMG 17GT still brings up Porsche cars in all his posts lately? Yes, it is a crazy fast time done by the GTR, It is an awesome car, but lets compare Mercedes flagship model(AMG GTR) vs Porsche flagship model(918), the best they both have to offer. The 918 is sub 7 seconds at the Ring-Porsche wins that,, GTS compares to a GT3RS-Porsche wins that, and the Base AMG GT compares to the GT3- Porsche wins that, compare apples to apples and the results favor Porsche.

When has the 991 GT3 RS posted an official Ring lap time??? Are you sure you are not looking at the old GT2 Ring times?

This thread is making me feel mighty good about my purchase. Seriously impressive time for what I believe is the best handling car on the planet. Perhaps the best handling road car ever. I remember Randy Post also saying the same thing in 2015 when the GTS won the motor trend drivers car of the year.

I wouldn't talk this down so quickly. After all, all you hear from P-owners is while AMG's are quick on the highway, they can quickly dispose of them on the track.
Which is coincidently quite true so far but we see that AMG does very well in short order.

Let's hope this car starts a turn around.
Btw. I'll take the 918 any day. Have you seen what they are selling

Sport Auto did a 7:28 with the GT3 RS. Same driver, Christian Gebhardt.

Sport Auto's independent times are more "official" than the manufacturer marketing times anyways.
