GT R - limited production or not?

Back in July 2016, a number of articles were published stating that the GT R would *not* be a limited production run. Then one or two outlets cast some doubt on that by opining that MB *might* limit to production to 2,000 units. Since that time, I've not been able to find anything definitive one way or another.

Does anybody have verifiable info (i.e., not "I heard blah blah") from a reputable source?

I have heard that 2,000 number batted around as well, but I heard it for North America and over several model years, probably until the body style end of life which is probably still another 4 years away. I doubt they are going to build and sell 2,000 2018's for the North American market, but with the performance numbers they just laid down on the Ring I suppose anything is possible. In AMG terms 2,000 units, 1,000 units or even 500 per model year would not be considered "limited production" in my opinion, far from it actually. Most of their "limited production" vehicles in the past have been produced by the hundreds(or less), not thousands. Black Series production numbers(North America) ranged from just shy of 100 units for the SLS to about 300 units for the CLK BS if I am not mistaken. Edition 1 vehicles are usually produced at a rate of 1 or sometimes 2 per dealership depending on model and I believe there are about 350+/- dealerships in North America. I believe there were 55 IWC Edition AMG CLS55's built in 2005, that is one of the rarest "limited production" AMG's I am aware of other than the uber rare CLK DTM's and of course the CLK GTR's which were produced by the dozens not hundreds or thousands.

JR:

2018 GTR--The initial order banks for the GTR opened and closed in 5 days. I haven't heard at this point in time if there will be another batch made or not.
The whisper was 2 per approved dealer. STILL no official US MSRP.

I'm guessing we'll see the first batch hit the US about the same time in 2017 that we saw the 2016 Edition 1's show up i/e mid to late March 2017. I sure hope we don't experience the same issues at the port that we did with the E1's.

2016 GTS Edition 1's -- The last production number I have seen is 370.

My E1 is still running flawlessly-no issues except premature rear tire wear.

AMG GTS BLACK-- This question was asked last night over on that other site you like so much. The Official answer is that there are no plans to make one yet. However, it may be at 4 years out since historically the Black is offered at the end of a model run cycle.

I hope you and yours have a very happy holiday season.

Regards

They never admit to anything over there. They denied there being a GT cabrio a year ago yet they just released when the GT-R was announced. Also Tobias made vague mention of a GT Black Series in an interview a month or two back. If they were to hint at a BS now it might push people off and hurt sales of other GT models. They are very hush hush.

Not sure this is true. I ordered my car today and instantly got an August build slot.

I posted a message with questions in the other post you made.

It AMG seems to have different ordering processes outside the US.

We are all just learning here.

They recently re-opened order banks on the GT-R, my dealership contacted me as well as someone from MBUSA asking me if I wanted an allocation a couple weeks ago, well after the initial order bank was opened.

I'll provide some insight on this from my experience, currently have a GTS ED1 and have a GTR built out (not submitted yet to MBUSA), and the dealership is confirming in the coming days if we have this approved. Right around 100 builds in the system as of this past week for GTR's. Last I've got for going forward; no msrp, no guarantee of build date, and that there will be some patience needed.

All and all, not nearly as frustrating as the Porsche world is with GT allocations I've felt, MB seems to be much more pleasant in terms of being upfront on the allocations and so on.

Still working on converting from the P-world, but hoping the GTR is the car to make that happen!

I agree, Porsche GT cars is probably the worst with allocations.

fun ones.
Regarding numbers I have it direct from MBUK that we have 150 cars coming for 2017(all gone) Not sure what that says about USA numbers.

I've tested the system by enquiringly about cars at a few dealers and been either pushed other models or given delivery dates in 2018.
