AMG GTS Facelift And New GTC Coupe Revealed

After recently debuting a convertible version of the AMG GT sportscar, Mercedes-AMG has announced that it will also offer a coupe version, bringing the total number of AMG GT iterations to six. Including the lowest tier AMG GT, there is also an AMG GT Roadster, an AMG GT S, an AMG GT C, an AMG GTC Roadster, and the hardcore AMG GT R. All of which, have a barely unique set of performance credentials.

According to Tobias Moers, the chairman
of the board of Mercedes-AMG, “With the AMG GT C Coupe, we are now expanding our portfolio of sports cars to six models plus the AMG GT3 customer sport racing car. In fewer than three years, the second vehicle to be developed by us entirely in-house has grown into a family, offering a highly dynamic driving experience in a variety of forms.”

Most of the differences in the AMG GT family comes down to how its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 is tuned. The base AMG GT and Roadster features 469 hp and 465 lb-ft, just above that, the AMG GT S features 515 hp and 494 lb-ft, while the AMG GT C and GT C Roadster features 550 hp and 502 lb-ft, and rounding out the group, the AMG GT R comes with 577 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.
Whil there are some other differentiations between the models such as the AMG GT C’s and GT R’s 2.5-inch wider track, underneath, the models are almost identical. One feature launched on the AMG GT R that is now on every model is the AIRPANEL active air management system. According to Mercedes-AMG, “Vertical louvers in the bottom of the front bumper can be opened and closed by an electric motor in around one second to guarantee the required amount of cooling. Constantly achieving the ideal position calls for highly intelligent and fast control.”

At the time of the GT C’s launch, Mercedes-AMG will offer an exclusive equipment package called the AMG GT C Edition 50, celebrating the 50th anniversary of AMG’s founding in 1967. The package will be available to be spec’d in design Graphite Grey Magno paint, and come with distinct black chrome highlights on the side skirts, front splitter, trim strips, rear diffuser and exhaust. Additionally, the AMG forged wheels have been “harmonized” with the rest of the car’s subtle cues with black chrome elements. Furthermore, the car will come with an Edition 50 logo on the rear of the car and embossed in the headrests.

The revised versions of the already introduced cars should be trickling towards dealers soon, while the AMG GT R, AMG GT C and GT C Roadster will likely be in dealerships later this fall. Mercedes-AMG has yet to announce pricing for the AMG GT C and GT C Roadster.

Very nice to see the range expand and unless I read that too quickly, is it clear if all models will wear the vertical grill?

Never one to stand in the way of progress, but I do like the original for its elegance, versus this more angry open mouthed look

That GTC buttocks looks amazing. One thing about stock car is that it looks a lot fatter in rear in person, so that extra width is going to make that car.

The GT C Coupe could be the one to have for those not inclined towards the track focused GT R

Motor Authority GT/GTS facelift article. On the technical side, cooling louvers and a little more HP.

Damn...so what to do with people bought the 17 GTA and GTS? Especially the GT, so not even one year life, will be faceLifted and 20 more HP?

I know MB wanna catch up with Porsche, while they just announced the new 911 GTS ...(now almost 20 models for 911!) but the AMG GT is so new, and not selling like hot cake ... They should make it like the Audi R8 ...

If you really think there is an actual difference in power between the 2017 GT 456hp and 2018 GT 469hp, I have some amazing ice cubes to sell you .
It's just marketing hype...

It doesn't really matter to me. Although I do like the look of the newer models, I still think the original still looks good in its own way. The original looks more classy while the newer models look more aggressive.

I'm getting old and I don't need the latest and greatest.

I'm enjoying my 11 year old Ducati more than my 1098R.

Agreed, while I can not verify the base GT HP ratings I can verify that AMG is doing some serious sandbagging on their GT-S HP ratings. When my GT_S was only a few weeks old and not even 100% broken in I did baseline dyno testing and the GT-S makes closer to 580hp at the crank. My bone stock GT-S made 484hp at the wheels. If we use the 18% drivetrain parasitic loss figure that equated to about 580 crank hp. So the question is did AMG really bump up the GT power from 456 to 469 or did they just up their claim to be closer to the realistic number? Weistec confirmed with me that all of the stock GT-S's they see are making much larger HP numbers than MB/AMG is claiming. One can only assume they are sandbagging equally on the Gt and GT-S figures...sandbagging is a good thing but I still do not understand why they are doing it.

This is the pain ... even the current look is nice too, but once "updated" look is out, the original look will be "dated" ..

Every time when a new "AMG" series is out, it is "WOW! NICE!" but then newer (better) model comes right the way .. and hurt the resale ..

Not mean to buy a car to invest, but it hurts ..

I know MN wanna follow the "911's marketing" .. make tons of diff models (19 diff 911 now?? ) but someone will buy a 911, no matter what model ... not for buyers looking for the AMG GT ...

GT, GT cab, GTS, GTC, GTC cab, GTR .... (I think they should just blend the GTS and GTC to one model .. )

Porsche guy who drives SL63 w/ perf pkg AND perf suspension
exactly what MB is doing, which is competing with the 911. they start out with a plain base version, GT $111k like a Carrera and add on more better, improved and higher performance versions till you still have a $200k car just like the turbo.

Agree-Same question jrcart, why do they understate HP?? Is it simply to create the impression of differentiation of the product line when there is really only one motor?

Not too sure if I like the new front more or not...but sure lovely the wider back of the GTC !

Pricing would be confused too .. GTS is ~$150k to 160k, and GTR is 180-190k .. So GTC would be ~170k loaded? Hardly see GTS buyers not jump to the GTC! (More cross shoppers from R8/911 T)

While base GT at ~130k loaded still decent .... (Direct fight with 911S)

That's the million dollar question I suppose, but car makers have been doing it for years. Maybe they do it for bragging rights that their "400"hp car which is really making 450hp is quicker than their competitors 400hp that really only make 400hp car when Motor Trend shows up to do the shootout. Not sure if they do it for insurance purposes, or for CAFE and EPA reason's maybe. Ferrari is always under rating their cars, the last two BMW M5's have been off by 40-60hp the Ford GT is off by 85hp, the Ford Mustang GT350 is off by 40hp, the Corvette Z06 is of by 50 hp, the list goes on and on. I can personally attest to the GT-S being off by about 75hp as all of my AMG's get dyno tested before I do any modifications. All of my Black Series cars were inline with what AMG quoted, my GT-S on the other hand was WAYYY off. So far off that I took the car to two separate dynos and came up with the same figures. The GT-S makes an honest 575-580 hp at the crank. Others from this forum has posted up similar stock baseline numbers for their cars as well so that means mine was not just some factory freak.

In the 60s and early 70s US manufacturers were understating HP because of the increasing interest and concern the auto insurance industry was taking. I don't think that is the issue these days but don't know what is.
