Electronic Rear Axle Differential Lock Inoperative

Hello MBWorld,

I purchased a ‘16 GTS with under 4K miles from a dealer this past week. I have been LOVING the car so far, the pops, grunts, and oomph make the soul feel right.

Everything has has been great so far, however last night after I drove over a dip, I got an error message “Electronic Rear Axle Differential Lock Inoperative”. The car ran fine and I turned it off for a minute and back on and the message was gone. A quick google search shows some people with c63s getting this message and the remedy for their problems seems to range from either 1. software update 2. change differential cable or 3. replace differential.

I searched this AMG GT forum and didn’t see anything.

Has anyone else encountered this message and if so, what was the solution?

Thank you for reading. I’m excited to join this community.

Welcome to MBWorld, Brian!

I've seen the same message. Once. It has not re-appeared.

Take it back to the dealership for service. They will see what caused the message. Although it didn't trigger a CEL it did throw a message and combined with your photo, they should be able to find something...even if it is just a one time anomaly. Please keep us informed. thanks!

Sometimes based on the unusual traction situation ie pothole the system turns itself off to prevent damage. A restart is needed to recover. Don’t feel blown off if the dealer tells you the same. Now if this happens more frequently and for no obvious traction compromise situation similar to what you had then there may be a problem.
To be safe check your tires to make sure the sizes are correct and they are inflated appropriately and that left and right have similar thread wear.
Welcome yo the group! And congrats!

Mine has not recurred either. I'll ask about it the next time I bring the car in for service.

This happened on my wife's brand new E63 wagon. It never happened again, but other things have happened since then, the car has been in the shop 35 days (still there) and it has only 900 miles. lol

Sadly, yeah we are at that point to let them know we don't want it anymore. They just told us "another 7-10 days" to get a tool to replace the cam adjustors. I have a feeling there's way more they aren't telling us, I think they have the whole motor out.

AMG GTS
Angry Rear axle differential inoperative

Hi All,
I have had my AMG GTS from new 2016. In June this year I had the message Electronic rear axle differential lock inoperative. The car was recovered by the RAC that evening and delivered to the local MB dealership. Initially they advised me it was an electronic problem and they wanted to replace a control unit. Cost of £2000. I agreed to have this done in order to fix the car. Unfortunately this did not work but I was advised I would still have to pay for the new part fitted. 4 months later after many communications between AMG and the dealer they have now advised me I need a completely new gear box at a cost of £9447.00. They do not guarantee this will fix the car. The mileage on the car is 32,000 miles. Can anybody advise me or recommend a specialist with any knowledge on this matter please?
