SL63 vs GTR

Thinking about trading my MY16 SL63 for the GTR. Anyone care to share the pros and cons. Already got MY17 S63 Sedan so for the DD cover. Looking for a weekend car for some canyon pulls.

Here is what I’m looking at:

SL63? Old man’s sports car. Cushy ride and luxury.
GTR is aggressive and raw . The green is flashy.

Id vote for the GTR.

I don't feel old, but technically when I turned 55 i fell into a different demographic...that said I agree, if you are looking for a comfortable boulevard cruiser with tons of torque or the occasional canyon run, the SL is your car. If not stay with what you have and enjoy it.

And while both cars have the AMG badge, the depreciation of the SL is horrendous. One example of a member taking a 100K hit on a low mileage car. https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...tech-tune.html.

BTW, I have a SL550, third one and leased them all, maybe not the smartest financially, but it works for me.

Yea I think the SL is the better cruiser and better for some hard pulls.. great car and more comfortable .. GTR if you want the hardcore, fly round corners, take to a track car..

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I’m in my mid 40s and love the SL with the top down with the SoCal weather. I agree the GTR is a thoroughbred race car out of the AMG lineup vs a city cruiser on the SL, just not sure if the green monster is something I want the attention it gets when out and about. It’s a bold statement indeed.

My dealer made me a great offer for my trade in and the decision process is..... I’m not in a hurry that is for sure. Thanks again for your input.

If you love the SL you may not like the GT. It's a bit more unrefined. If you get the Green Hell GT R you may get looks, but my brilliant blue GT is stealthy.

I’m not sure how much attention you’ll attract . It really depends where you live.
Im in NY suburbs. Fancy cars abound. My Solarbeam Yellow GTS gets no attention .

I've had 3 SL63's (not all at once) - I loved that car. However, it was time for a change. As a matter of fact, I had my SL63 in for some warranty work and there were a couple of service writers gathered around watching a video. It was a video of the GTR - beast of the green hell trailer. Once I got home, I started searching for more info and decided I wanted one. So while I was waiting for mine. I sold my SL to a guy out of AZ, who flew in and I picked him up at the airport. We went to the bank, took care of business and he drove off. This guy was older, had knee problems and was pretty hefty in size. He struggled getting in and out of this thing, and yes it was for him. I kept thinking, he's probably going to get tired of that and end up selling it as well.

I think you need to get in and out of the GT-R a few times as it is not as easy as the SL. Then you should take it for a test drive. It is a complete different animal than the SL. The SL is very easy to live with whereas the GTR is not your typical Benz. Egress, vision, ride is a big step down from the SL.
Malibu summed it up nicely above. I think comparing both is kinda apples and oranges.

Ive owned an SL (2013 SL63 with the upgraded AMG suspension over the std AMG SL63)

The SL is a true GT cruiser with a dual personality (roof down option) and is not for an old man when it has 577 hp stock and over 600 tq. The M157 engine is a rocket and bada$$ when tuned. Its a true freeway crusher with an excellent exhaust note. Its on the ABC air platform (mine was) and its a bit more fluffy but still taut enough in the right moments if GT cruising. It does not have the grip of the GTR or the steering connectivity along with the magnetorheological shocks. It also has more yaw and body roll as it weights alot more than the GTR. It also will be much more comfortable for a long long drive.

The driving dynamics are completely different with the engine placement and transmissions being a MCT vs a DCT. The GTR is a track car than be street driven and the SL is a good straightline runner than has some athletic abilities in bends and sharp turns. But it wont come remote close to the GTR in the handling regard or just general performance numbers from trap speed to exit and entry cornering. But then its not designed to be that way.

So I would say (outside of value estimation) it has to be about personal needs and expectations. I would not get another SL as it was just a depreciation piggy but it was fun for first few months cruising the CA beach roads.

Thanks guys. Have test driven the GTR several times both at the dealer and my friends. It’s is a very aggressive track car for sure and getting in and out is not as easy as the SL.

My concern is that the GTR is too aggressive ( I know there is no such thing in the AMG forum ) for California roads where there are allot of stop and go traffic. First world problem weather to get a monster track car vs a daily drivable sports car.

Thanks again for your input.

Weather refers to atmospheric conditions. The word you needed was whether.

( guess I really am a douchebag )

Why not just get a GT or GTS? A lot of guys DD the Car and it’s perfect for 3-4 hour blasts.

Just dont think your the “green monster track guy Car” driver.

I think the GTR is pretty docile in comfort mode to be a daily drivable sports car.

Get the car with Distronic Plus, place it in C mode and it’s (the GTR) an extremely docile car to drive in heavy traffic. That being said, you should take a look at the GTC coupe from the sounds of things.
