GTS vs E63 AMG?

Anyone owned both or have insight? I currently own a w212 E63S and I'm thinking to potentially trade up to a GTS tomorrow. It's a big purchase obviously, I'm not rich or anything, just have a passion and love of cars like many here.

What's the difference? Which one is more fun to drive or better? and why? Significant happiness over the E?

Interesting posts lately where people seem to be comparing apples and oranges. One is a four door sedan with all the comfort for 4 people, heavy yet 4WD makes it stupid fast in a straight line and the other one is a 2 door sports car oriented to be more agile in the corners with limited visibility and space for 2.
I owned a W218 CLS63 before owning the GT. The GT is now relegated to a week end weapon and some track use whereas the CLS was a daily driver. That does not mean I feel that the GT could not be used as a DD as I did for 6 months (I have 12K miles on it) but I am trying to reduce my depreciation curve and avoid stupid dings and dents since it's matte.
It will all depend on what your main purpose is. Once you identify that, your choice will become crystal clear.

I have both right now but I have the new W213 E63S and its an incredible car based on what its dealing with from a weight perspective. It drives like its 400 lbs lighter and the twin scrolls really get this car going. Its the perfect car for the streets and daily usage with the twin screens and revamped interior over the W212.

Ill answer just what you asked and can chime in more as you need:

Difference stock vs stock: hp and tq is much greater in the E63S - the launches are brutal with AWD and the new 9 speed MCT is pretty efficient as proven in so many tests higher speeds in the quarter and beyond. It can easily out race my GTS (if both stock) from a dig and from a roll it would be closer and the higher hp and tq rating does offset the weight. The GTS gets a dual clutch tranny and magnetorhelogical dampers (mine has em) and its more of a sports car with tracking capabilities while the E63S is a daily driver multi purpose sedan. Clearly there are visual differences too but both cars are very taut and rigid and on the wrong roads- they can be very uncomfortable. There also technical differences but you can check the website for that.

Whats more fun or better? Its all subjective but having both, I miss the GTS after a good day with the E63S and vice a versa. If Im driving canyons or streets that require 8/10ths or more from the driver, the GTS is the pick but if Im just on the streets or freeways and need stop light crushing and quick 60 to 130 bursts, the E63S is a great weapon of choice. They are just too different to compare relatively IMHO.

I never have significant happiness over each when using the other. They are great machines and compliment each other when it comes to my needs. If I only could have one and had more back seat needs and extensive long commuting drives, the E63S would be my pick. Its a multipurpose car than can deliver more into the world of the GTS than the GTS can into the world of the E63S.

Thank you for the replies guys, very helpful. I am young and have no kids (I am 24, don't plan on having kids anytime soon either). Been dying to have my first 'sports car.' I know the E is a properly fast car that is really multi-purpose. Perhaps I just need to be more practical. It was a great thought - purpose and weapon of choice.

If I purchase this car it would have to be a daily driver, and it's quite rainy up here in WA.

The AWD car will make more sense up there.

I own the W212 E63S MY2016. I will never upgrade to the w213. I test drove it and do not like the interior. Not much for the technology and the ugly iPad screen. The overall look of the w213 especially the rear end is weak, could care less for I like and feel the w212 is the best overall E63S MB ever produced. My father has the GTS. Drove it few times it's not a car for me. He is older and maybe it makes him feel young at heart or at the wheel. All our driving is done in sunny Florida unlike WA.

A tuned GTS is quicker than a tuned E63S on a 60-130mph highway pull. Not by much but it will slowly roll away.

The difference is obvious. GT is a purpose driven sports car and the E is a 4 sedan that offers a lot of HP.

You need back seats ? If not carry on.

I also own both...The GTS is only a great sports car, the E63s wagon is a sports car, a great GT car and can haul a set of wheels and tires for the GTS..

2019 E63s
I’ve owned both

And tracked both.. I daily drove my GTS In snow rain and sunshine. I traded it for my 18 e63s...

The things I miss the most from the GTS are the steering feel and exhaust note... the steering was so connected it was almost as if you thought about it and it happened. I loved it but ultimately it wasn’t the right car for me. I’m thrilled and grateful to have owned one.

My e63s is my 4th one. I had one prior w213 early build with issues and a 2014 w212 and a 2010 w212. In a nutshell it’s the car for me. I love the interior and exterior of the new car. It rides a bit stiff but man this car has so many personalities...

As a daily I think my e63 is overkill but I love knowing that I have all of it under my right foot waiting for me to call it up as I need it.

The GTS is a good daily driver in my experience but I wouldn't be able to have it as my only automobile. There's no rear seats making it impractical for family or more than 1 friend/relative and space is limited. That's why SUVs exist. Since you're looking at owning one or the other, the E63 is more suitable for your situation and also more practical for Washington.

Attend the AMG Driving Academy and you will be able to make up your mind. Yes, these are all full for the rest of this year so you will have to get on the wait list and take whichever track becomes available. Doing this in 2004-2006 convinced me that I wanted a SLK55 rather than a C55 or SL55, and doing this in 2007 convinced me that the C63 was finally ready for prime time.

As for the AMG GTs "looking bad on paper" against the E63s, I expect that to change change for the 2020 model year

I think you shouldn't pass up the chance to share your supercar with your friends or another couple. I have always driven a sedan for that purpose, a couple of 3rd Gen Ford SHO's, or had a 911 or two when I had my 1st 1997 E420. A man needs a sedan, a truck, and then a two seater, IMO. What I love is that my 212 E63 S serves all of the purposes of both my E class and 911 TT combined!

Because I have owned more cars than 50 people would own in a lifetime I often get asked questions like this. Since I realize the way I see cars is different than most I always respond like this. What do you expect from a car? Is it going to be your only car? What type of driver are you? What are the most important things a car must do for you? Are you worried about resale? Usually when someone answers those question they have s pretty good idea of what to do. Of course I always advise a test drive.

2019 E63s
I’m changing my tune a bit...

I sat in a gtc recently and was reminded of how comfortable it is compared to my e63s. I also find myself getting tired of the technology in the 213 e63s because it is not consistent. Some days it works other days it’s not. I’m at an age now (49) where my time in the car is more about the drive then anything g going on while I’m driving. I’m finding that the honeymoon with CarPlay is coming to an end. Give me distronic for the traffic jams and a set of snows in the winter and I will be happy as a clam on a gtc coupe forever... I also happen to think it will eventually be a classic and hold its value... these are the last of the non hybrid sports/super cars... certainly the steering is the best I’ve ever felt...

your logic is flawed . The E63s is more comfortable, better technologically advanced, more practical and an overall better daily driver. Especially in snow with winter tires .

Live with a GT for a while before trying to chime in meaningfully.

That i have. I daily drove one in all climates. I drove it in the summer on track and In winter in snow with snow tires and everything in between. My logic is based on my opinions and my truths. I offer up my opinion as exactly that-my opinion. I also have daily driven several e63’s. 2-212’s and 2- 213’s. I know very well from what I speak of in relation to MY cars and MY experiences. In the future before you make dim witted remarks about someone’s experiences maybe read through the entire thread, or maybe just think before you write.

Cheers.

I read your post and you’re looking at this car with rose colored glasses. Is it fun to drive on open roads ? Yes but so is any other sports car including the Mazda Miata .

The car car is comfortable enough. The ride is stiff. You won’t compress a vertebra or forget how to do higher mathematics . But it’s not cushy and you feel every bump on bad roads.

its nerve wracking in traffic. The othe drivers are right on top of you . They are begging to bump your car.

In snow, forget it. Low clearance, rear wheel drive. It is USELESS . No traction , no movement other than fish tailing. If you talking about driving in snow flurry that’s one thing but NY Nor’easters you’re stuck.

try to give someone a ride and you’re out of luck if it’s more than one person.

The GT car is made for fun not practical driving . For that you need an suv.
