What model year is a car registered in 01/2018?

What model year is a car registered in 01/2018?
My GTC is registered as of 01/2018. Is it a 2018 or a 2019 model? I'm asking since the facelift GTs are advertised as the "2020 model" although they'll be for sale and in distribution in 2019.

registration has nothing to do with car model year.
Registration is government knowing about car and paying your fees and taxes.
build date is on driver door nameplate with tire info.
But run VIN to determine model year.
I have seen trucks built in April 2001 be called 2002 model yers.
