AMG GTR Roadster

As anticipated, here is the AMG GTR roadster...

sorry, am posting this on the phone; there are better articles around...

Shmee’s first look ...

Looks about as pointless as the GTR Roadster.

xbox 03-05-2019 04:14 AM

Looks like everyone needs a spoiler, which could never have been more aptly named as in this case.

thecutter64 03-05-2019 11:28 AM

One word: WHY?

MalibuScott 03-05-2019 11:37 AM

Not a lot of love for the R rattle box. (My term of endearment for a convertible.)

MG1422 03-05-2019 12:15 PM

Looks so much better as a C, S rather than the R...yikes

Wolfman 03-05-2019 12:48 PM

I like the GTR roadster with the exception of the wing. That looks just plain weird on a top down car IMO. Understand the purpose for a track car but the roadster really isn't that.
GTC roadster is my fav; wide-body, rear wheel steering and some creature comfort options like air scarf for those who do not live in CA, AZ, FL, orTX

Gojirra99 03-05-2019 01:23 PM

I actually prefer the fixed wing look, coupe or roadster, compared to the pop up wing, which I always thought looks awkward and kinda ugly.
When the wing is retracted, you could argue it looks cleaner, but I never like the way it looks when it pops up.

I posted the exact same thing over on the PL site.

The high performance track version is a GT R coupe, as many events will not allow Verts to run on a road course.

For the street, the GT C Roadster ticks all of the boxes and will have a ‘better’ ride than a GT R version.

This makes little sense to me.

But maybe it will look cool at C&C.

Agreed but you have to look at it differently

Most of us here are enthusiasts who tend to use our cars as they were intended and not own a garage Queen.

This is is a simple business case for Mercedes. They are using an existing chassis and creating a need for something that you didn’t realize you need:) By limiting production to 750, they are also hoping to create a sense of urgency.

No one who gets one of these will be able to or want to track them. Up here a GTR is approx $200k plus or minus options plus tax. Roadster versions tack on another $10k plus whatever else makes it exclusive... my bet is these will likely retail for over $225k plus tax. Not something I would take to the track.

Just my 2cents. Thanks for listening. :)

susman@eurogermantown.com 03-05-2019 05:23 PM

yea, I kinda think of the R as the track rats AMG... I think the GT/GTC The C being just that much cooler in widebody and rear wheel and 550hp) is the perfect fun car and back road car, occasional track day car in coupe and convertible versions

correct most track days may not let a convertible in.. but Id have to see as they may let a cab in if it has the rollover protections

In todays consumer, social media, show-off driven (no pun intended) market, the answer is simply and unashamedly why not.

Huracan Performante Spyder IMO is another glaring example of a track-focused derivative, that "needed" its roof cut off !?!?!?! :slap:

py0413 03-06-2019 03:54 AM

It might be pointless and weird looking with the rear spoiler but still quite a cool car. I like the fact that those full leather seats can be selected unlike the GTR only offers in dynamica. I get it that GTR is made for different purposes other than being anything luxurious, however, having more options for personal preferences at always nice. :)

susman@eurogermantown.com 03-06-2019 12:15 PM

i have done several track days in cabs (miatas, boxsters etc) and do like the open top on track.. wind, smells, sounds... Im sure the 4lV8 AMG engine sounds better than a miatas

C280 Sport 03-06-2019 01:43 PM

So what is different about the GTR Roadster? Beautiful car thou!

As the name applies. Full-bore GTR minus the roof

Wassaby 03-08-2019 01:02 PM

At limited to 750 units worldwide is going to be a rare car.

JSwan724 03-08-2019 01:31 PM

I am not sure that limited production number cars mean much.

If the rumors about GTR production are true, 350 were produced in 2018 and 150 in 2019.

Correct. Not sure that a 3 year production run could be considered limited...

Gojirra99 03-08-2019 02:10 PM

Well, at least you'll get that special plaque " # of 750 " on it :D

It really has turned into a pretty rare 'bird' the GT R, hasn't it? A 'limited edition', just not in name! lol

In a couple of years these cars are going to be a hot item on the used market I think. Not that I give a crap about resale, it's just that they are already a performance bargain at MSRP. Used they're a heck of a bargain.

Love the brake light integrated in the wing.... (rolling eyes)

Markjayw 10-14-2019 11:24 AM

For those saying what is the point, I remember my Gallardo Performante, and the sound with the top down was insane. Yes you can get a similar sound with a GTC Roadster, however I like the looks of the GTR, with the drop top, yumm.
