AMG GTC Roadster
 
Hi everyone,

I've driven AMGs in the past previously owned a c63s. Currently own a 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo. It's a great car, but can seem kind of boring at time. Recently I've been looking at GTC Roadsters and thinking of trading my 911 in for it. Has anyone here previously driven 911 Turbo and traded in for a GTC or GTC roadster and regretted it?

I haven’t driven a recent 911 TTS, but I do know that they can be called somewhat ‘sterile’ in nature even though they are a phenomenal DD, and are a very rapid car in all conditions. Joe Average can’t tell one from pretty much all other 911s though.

You would never consider a GTC ‘boring’ however. It really is an event type car every time you drive it. Get an extended test drive and place the GTC in Sport/Sport+ mode. You’ll have a massive grin on your face within seconds. Plus you can keep it in that mode and place the suspension in ‘C’ mode if the roads are crap and it will still be a very compliant ride. I’m basing my thoughts on my GT R; the GT C is a little more street oriented.

Hell I traded in my 991 Turbo S for my wagon.. The AMG GT will never get boring, just buy a pre-owned and with the savings do all the modifications you like with the money you saved..

The thing with cars of this class you really need to find a dealership that will let you do an extended test drive on the roads you enjoy.

I did a 55mi. test drive in the E63s wagon and knew right then and there it was worthy of trading in the Turbo S, same with my GTS. I never looked back at the Porsche, too boring..

At this price range, I bet they are all down to personal preferences, both the AMG GT(s) & Porsche 911(s) are phenomenal cars.

My 911 is a base 991.2 w/ 7-speed Manual. I’ve wanted to get a 911 turbo, the only thing holding me back is the newer ones do not have manual transmission. The AMG is as many mentioned, quite a special car to driver every time you ge behind the wheel. I’ve only taken delivery of the GT R for a week now, but I do absolutely love this machine.

I have driven a Carerra loaded with most of the turbo suspension pieces. IT was an amazing car. When we got the GTC we had the 911 Turbo S as one of our cars to consider. It is by far more race capable and even has more room than the GTC. In the end there was one thing the Porsche did not have and that was the LOOKS. I FELL in love with the way the GTC looks on the outside and the inside. Especially the interior was light years ahead of the 911 in looks. NOW I hear the 2020 911 will have a new interior and at that point I might take a different stance.

I'm sure a lot of us on the forum have made the AMG GT / 911 comparison as owners or potential buyers. Before buying our 2016 AMG GT S Ed1, we had owned, since 2005, C-, CL- and SL-Class AMGs. When we purchased the GT S, we already had a 2015 991.1 Turbo S. When driving one of the cars, I never felt I'd rather be driving the other one. The GT S was a blast to drive. I loved the ttV8 performance and sound. By comparison, the lighter 911 felt more nimble, was quicker (though not a factor in most normal driving) and had fewer minor quality issues like those reported for the AMG GTs on this forum (rocking seats, suspension rattles, etc.), but mine was an early build. With AWD on the 911, I liked the way the car clawed its way around corners. But the 911 was so quiet and it lacked the drama and dare I say NASCAR stock car-like sound with the GT S! (DTM sedan or AMG GT3 racecar would be a more appropriate comparison.) I was amazed by the number of people giving me high-fives, talking with me and taking photos/videos of the car in parking lots and gas stations. Maybe because the GT S was newly introduced, the ratio of comments, videos, etc. was about 100 to 1 in favor of the GT S over the Turbo S, in part because here in SoCal there are a ton of 911s. We liked the GT S so much that over a year ago we ordered a GT C Roadster at launch and had an allocation; however, because of a bad dealer experience, we bought another car that was on our short list at the time. About a year ago, we replaced the Turbo S for a 991.2 GT3, which for my money and car/motorsports interests is the perfect car for me. That said, as our other car is coming off lease in several months, I'm considering replacing it with a GT C or GT R - I like the AMG GT cars that much and with the coupe's hatchback and some features like keyless go, parking sensors and auto stop/start, it's probably a better daily driver. That could bring us back to a terrific AMG GT / 911 garage. Definitely try to find an AMG GT to drive. My first 5-10-minute drive of a GT S at launch didn't wow me, but I never regretted owning it once I bought it. Good luck.

for me.......

i have a GTC roaster and a 991 turbo mk2 (not S)

gtc is more stiff,seat are more stiff,only steering is less stiff than a turbo.........

but GTC have more "presence" than the turbo

turbo is perfect car...................GTC is perfect look

The GTC Roadster is a great drop top car and it's fast but not as fast as the TTS. The thing is though that it's a better looking car and has more of a presence as mentioned before. I love the sound, it's a perfect note and it has the built in muffler delete button which is great. I will repeat, it's not as fast as the TTS but it's still a great car. I love driving it but since it's my wife's, I don't get too many opportunities.

I had a launch edition 2016 GT S, so it was an early build. Coming out out of an SL550 (and having owned an SL63), and with our other car being a 991.1 Turbo S, I was surprised how stiff the GT S was in Comfort mode. In other threads, I think I’ve read that the newer post-2016 GT Ss were not as harsh and more refined. Compared to the GT S, I found the suspension in the Turbo S (and my previous 911, a Turbo) with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) to be more refined in handling pavement irregularities. The 991.2 GT 3 suspension is stiffer than the 911 tts and the AMG GT S.

I was switching cars between the GT S and 911 Turbo S and what I felt as harshness in Comfort mode in the GT S never took away from my enjoying the car. I was always amazed at how flat the GT S cornered even in Comfort mode. I did a brief test drive in a GT C Roadster about three months ago and didn’t find the ride to be harsh, but I was driving on SoCal roads that were smooth. Overall, I think a buying decision at a particular price point comes down mainly to performance, handling (where curb weight is a factor) and style. Given comparable performance (speed), my priority is handling which, for me, is related to curb weight and suspension set-up. I’m fine with a stiff suspension and I’ve not seen complaints on this forum about suspension harshness/stiffness being an issue with these AMG GT cars.

I traded in my 2016 911 Turbo S cabriolet in for a new 2018 GTC roadster in January. So I have done exactly what you are contemplating! I think the sentiments above capture it well. The 911 TTS is an amazing car. It does everything very well, but it is a bit sterile and lacks visual and audible drama... and in some ways that is the point of a 911 turbo. It is an everyday supercar. My GTC is, frankly, not as good an all-rounder car as the 911. The GTC's ride is harsher, slower, is rear wheel drive only, only seats two adults and will have a lower resale value. However, it has a tremendous sense of occasion. It is a better looking car by far, and the noises it makes are wonderful. After driving the 911 turbo for two years, I also became bored. I won’t keep this car forever and I know I will take a bigger depreciation hit compared to the 911 turbo, but I am happy with my purchase and have no regrets.

P.S. My everyday car is a 2018 E63s wagon but on the occasions I drive my GTC, it puts a big smile on my face. The 911 didn’t do that for me.

but you have what’s called “Siri eyes free”. This means if you have a paired iPhone, then a long press of the voice button on the steering wheel will call up Siri and it works basically the same as CarPlay.

In the 2020, CarPlay and android auto are present.

Yes, you have some voice control but I find that I love having the apps on the screen from which to choose and manipulate (in my wife's Bolt!) Much quicker and less prone to confusion. I like the "Siri eyes free" but having lived with a real CarPlay I find the other (mine) lackluster. My 2¢.

Yesterday my wife and I went to dinner in her car and it got compliments everywhere. We stopped to gas it up and a guy in a pickup tells me it's a beautiful car. Then we get to the domain and I am waiting outside Neiman Marcus for my wife to pick up a pair of shoes she ordered and a guy starts taking pictures and gives me the thumbs up. Then when I was pulling the car into the valet a lot of people were staring at it and taking pictures. That's Ferrari like attention for a MB, pretty unique I would say. Not many MB get that kind of props.

My 2-year old '17 GT S is still regularly getting compliments, and just recently when I walked out to the cineplex parking lot after seeing Captain Marvel, a couple were taking pictures of my car ...

I partly think it’s a function of how rare these cars are in comparison to say a ‘911’. Well, plus the fact that they look frickin awesome! lol.
