Unhappy Help! COMAND center meltdown

Hello,
Am new to board and just bought a 2005 E500 with stock radio. Everything worked fine until this morning, when the unit would hold the "Mercedes Benz" sign and not proceed further. I turned the car on and off, the power on and off, but the screen stays with "Mercedes Benz." Occasionally it will go to a white screen that reads "NAV not available." None of the other COMAND buttons work either (RAD/SAT/etc).

Any ideas? Is there a way to do a hard reset? Do I have to take it in for diagnostics? This is annoying as I've only had the vehicle for 5 days!

Any assistance is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
PMMD

The very first thing I would check is whether COMAND (I assume you have it since you mentioned the MB logo and not Audio 50) power is on. If it is off, the COMAND screen will illuminate with the MB logo when you unlock the car or open a door, then fade to black and nothing will work - as you described. Push the power switch in. Leave it on. It should come on when you either start the car or turn the ignition switch just short of starting. There is no need to turn it off when you exit the car.

If that doesn't work, the good news is, you should be covered under warranty. I wouldn't do anything too exotic, for fear of voiding the warranty.

However, you might try checking your fuse diagram (probably in the tool area of the spare tire well), pulling any fuses related to COMAND or the components attached to it (radio, phone, nav, etc), leaving them out for 30 seconds or so, then putting them back in and re-starting. As you pull the fuses, be sure especially to check the one for COMAND to see that it is good.

Let us know how it works out. And if you overlooked the power switch or just got it out of sequence, you will not be the first to have done it.

if the mbenz logo appears for a while and goes away, then you have a break in the fiber loop that connects all the audio components. This can be a physical break in the fiber (rare) or a power to one of the fiber connected components is disconnected. Check all fuses in all 3 fuse boxes of the car.

Thanks

Thanks for the help. Everything came back to normal this morning without intervention. I don't know what kind of Gremlin that was, but I'm taking it in today for diagnostics just in case.

I believe Sunil is correct in saying that if the MB logo comes on and then fades it indicates a fiber optic beak or malfunctioning equipment in the loop - if the COMAND power is on.

However, if the power is off, COMAND will show the MB logo briefly when the car is unlocked, or if a door is opened, then it wil fade. This is normal operation.

Thanks guys...

My function had restored itself by the next morning and the unit no longer got stuck on the screen "navigation unavailable." I still took it to my local MB dealer. They said it was a software problem and had a flash upgrade. Got the car back and so far, so good. Guess we'll see...

Thanks again...am loving the power in the E500...It'll have to do until I jump on an E63

Regards,
PMMD
