ipod integration - where do you route the ipod cable?

I would like to know how everyone routes the ipod cable. I have a 2006 w211 with the sliding center console door. I would very much like to place my ipod in the center console/arm rest. When I took out the cup holder piece, I discovered a hole in the front going into the gear shifter section. I thought, wow, that's perfect. However, the hole is not big enough to pass the connector through from either end. I suppose the next choice is the glove compartment. But I can't find any passage inside the compartment out to the radio section. I suppose I can take out the aux connector, there will be a hole, then. But this is even smaller than the hole in the center arm rest. So, my question is, even if your ipod integration unit is installed by a shop, how exactly do they pass the ipod cable to whichever the compartment you connect your ipod in today? Many thanks for all of your helps!

P.S. I saw a video of itronics installation, but the part on how the cable is passed into the center console is missing.

You can take a dremel tool and widen the hole at the bottom of the center console. note that you do have to unbolt and lift up the console to run the cable. the glovebox can be done the same way... a number of places sell rubber gromits that will fit the hole you drill to run the cable for a more finished look.

Hi rob13572468, thanks very much for the reply! Can you tell me where those bolts are for 2006 w211? The itronics video shows that the 2004 w211 has false floor in the center console held down by a couple of clips. But I can't figure out a way to lift the felt. And the false floor feels like part of the center console molded in one piece. I want to lift up the console, but can't figure out where to start

The phone bulletin for the '05, later VINs, may help. See http://phdwebsite.powerpulse.cc/Phon...0E%20Sedan.pdf starting with Fig. 37.

Skylaw, thank you very much for the information! Fig. 37 shows the exact picture of my center console. Following the instructions, I took out the side piece, and revealed the teleaid wiring and the antenna connector just as described in the document. However, the factory pre-wiring comes into the console through a narrow fitting, there is not a visible passage from the opening to either the bottom of the console, or the gear shifter section. Any other suggestions? thanks, again!

If you buy a Mercedes with the iPod interface factory installed, the connector will be in the glovebox.

If you obtain factory retrofit instructions, that will be the specified location.

This means the interface wasn't necessarily designed for placement elsewhere, and therefore that might not be so easy.

Where can I find the retrofit instructions? I assume a hole still needs to be drilled in the glovebox to pass the cable into the glovebox. Would the hole be left, right, or in the middle? Thanks!

Put it where you want it. My installation is quite different from the MB iPod kit (which isn't available for my car). My center console is quite different from yours, and there are no instructions as to how to place these retrofits - you do the best you can.

I chose to do mine this way, and yes, I had to drill holes:

I like your setup in the center console. When you say "drill" do you actually use the drill bit to open a hole or it's a generic term for making a hole? I suppose I can widen the hole that's already in my center console with either a drill bit or the dremel tool. I just worry about the dust. Even using saw, there will be saw dust ....

Subscribe for a day to startekinfo and you can find the retrofit instructions plus you can download the equivalent of an entire service manual if you have the patience.

Look in group 82 for ipod info.

In fact I used a drill. Verrry carefully. Could just as well have used a Dremel tool, and wouldn't argue against it.

The one thing I did not do was widen any holes that already had wiring. Not a good approach with either tool. I cut new holes.

lkchris' suggestions are good ones as well; I just didn't want my iPod in the glove compartment.

Skylaw I want to set up my Ipod in the same place as yours. How did you route the IPOd cable from radio to the armrest. I cannot figure out how to remove the center console, gear shift etc. Can you provide Step by step instructions.

You will find detailed instructions and photos at https://mbworld.org/forums/audio-ele...mentation.html - click on the photos to enlarge them.

You may find the pdf file in the first post at http://www.mbca.org/forum/how-integr...se-mb-ipod-kit easier to follow. You may have to establish a "guest" account in order to see and download the pdf.

Thanks I routed it in the glovebox. The hole was already there for the ipod. I just removed the plug and bam.!
