Car Doesn’t Always Crank. Hoping to Diagnose Issue

Hi everyone!

I’m having an issue which I can’t seem to find information on but am hoping someone can chime in and provide some direction in hopes of addressing my problem.

Every so often I when I open the driver side door I notice a few of the icons on the instrument cluster come on for a second and go off. When this happens and I insert the key into the ignition the car will not crank. I have to (for a few minutes) take the key in and out of the ignition, wait a few seconds, and continuously turn the key in hopes of cranking the engine over. After a few minutes of trying this the hazard lights will double blink and the car starts right up with no issues.

I’ve connected the car to my MB Muliplexer, ran diagnostics on Xentry, but don’t ever get a fault code. Does anyone know what the potential problem is and a solution? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

ESL failing? Do you hear it release when you first put the key in?

If it release and still won't start, you need to look at why. Check EZS actual values when turning the key, is it recognizing the key being turned? If there are no faults, it points to a bad ignition switch (EZS) most likely.

The ESL just releases the column when the key is inserted. But if it isn't doing that, nothing else works as the car won't turn the ignition on until the ESL opens up.

When I initially open the car door I see the few lights on the cluster automatically go on which automatically lets me know that I will have the ignition issue. Would you say this is also the a symptom of a bad ignition switch?

Hard to say, would require more diag. You're in south FL, where at? I'm a tech at MB of Miami

I think the CL does it in slightly more luxury than the mustang did though

I’m in the Boca Raton area.. Wiuld it be far fetched to think it may have something to do with the factory security system?

There still shouldn't be random lights coming on the dash when opening the door. I'd wager there's something disrupting the CAN and causing it to not allow the car to start, but actual diag would be necessary, anything else would just be me guessing at it, which is no help. It's definitely not a common problem.

is there a specific diag I should do because when I run Xentry I don’t get any error codes?

Gotta look at actual values in the DAS system and EZS when it's happening, see if the signals are getting through. This is a tough one to diagnose without having the car in front of me.

Thank you Joe for all of your help! I’ll see if I come across anything that doesn’t seem kosher and let you know! Hope you have a goodnight
