98 C230 Speed (cruise) control dropping out

My wife was driving our 98 C230 tonight and said the when the car started to decend a small hill on the highway the cruise control would drop out. Causing her to reset it until the next time it came to the downside of a hill. She stated that after the 4th or 5th time the check engine light came on. Any hints or clues??
Thanks

Addendum to 98 C230 cruise control dropping out

I test drove the car today. the cruise control works fine until you get over 55 mph. THEN it drops out. It will not set over 55 mph either. Set it at 54 and it will work all the way to the next downhill run. You hit 56 and it drops out. You set the cruise at 45 works all day roll down a hill and get to 56 and it drops out.
Need some help here people. :-)

I had a 86 190D that did the same thing. Ended up needing what the mechanic told me was a new cruise control module. I decided not to have it fixed. At first it would stop working when it hit a hill or what not. Later it would only hold the speed for a little bit and then it all together stopped working. I hope this helps. Ohh and if you have had Check Engine Light problems you could try taking it to Autozone who will run the codes for free.

98 C320 cruise control dropping out.

Thanks for the post. I was wondering if anyone had any mechanical experience around here. LOL I had the computer scanned and came up with a P0170 code. (kinda points into the Mass Air Sensor area) I tightened a loose hose clamp after the MAS and disconnected the battery to clear the computer. So far.. no return of the light.
The cruise control is a necessity for us. Its one of our favorite options on any car. LOL

I was hoping that if you ran the codes it would say something is wrong with the cruise control. It could still be the cruise control module, but from my understanding a malfunction should result in an error code. Im sorry I can not be of more assistance, but perhaps some of the other members might share their experiences. You could also try www.club202.com

The only code that showed up was P0170...MAS type code. That was it. Only one.

Same problem 2000 c230K cruise cuts out at 60 instead of 55 and seems to work fine below that. I am bringing it to the sears import (dealer) tomorrow to have this and a couple of other issues looked at. I got a pile of them! I will post what I find. Anyone else with this issue please post probs or findings. The better I can narrow the problem down the le$$ I have to $pend at the dealer.

cruise control module is a well-documented (and expensive) repair that a lot of w202 owners have to get.

i would suggest that you refrain from using it in short spurts and reserve it for long drives only to get the longest life possible

If you have aftermarket wheels also, it can cause the cruise control to cut out if your tire sizes ratios are off.
