Leaking timing cover gasket? - 98 C280

Anyone on here had a leaking timing cover gasket?

Mine seems to be leaking pretty bad - not sure if I should be thinking about something behind it, or just the timing cover gasket.

It's a 98 C280..

OK, to be more specific, does anyone know what this part is?

Is this the timing cover gasket expansion cover? I think this is the main source of the leak in my car.

Here are two pictures - the first is an overview picture - the second is a closer image.

Here is an overview shot of where it is

(Note, the shot is looking straight down from the top of the engine - the bottom part of the image is the radiator hose. The metal piece at the top right is where the oil filter plugs into (I think the whole plate that it actually belongs to is the timing cover.)

Any help is appreciated, as I have no manual.

And a follow-up, hopefully helping future viewers.

This was simply the expansion cover that was leaking, not the timing cover itself.

Difference in price?

Timing cover gasket (which was quoted by an MB independent shop) $1200

The real fix - a little gasket with two bolts, easily accessible at the front of the engine $14 from the dealership.
