Shifter won't stay in drive

99 c230k and my car shifter slides up to neutral. I have to usually just hold the shifter back in drive the whole time because it would go up at anytime there is this little space between neutral and drive that the shifter always goes in to which cause it to not drive and act like it's in neutral all other gear spots are tight and not loose like the drive gear .
Suggestions?

Very starnge, you don't need to take the shifter out to examine the bushing or make shift rod adjustments---that's all done from below!!
