Increasing interval between services

Hi Everyone,

I read on another post that the service interval on my C240Auto was, in part, dependant on the oil quaility and that the car measures the volume and QUALITY of the oil to determine how long between each A & B service.

Here in the UK the service cost is very high (£120 ($175) for A and £320 ($470) for B).

I was wondering....... If I change the oil half way through the approx 12000miles between the A & B will the computer recalculate the service gap and give me, say, 18000 miles? The oil costs £25 so I could end up saving quite a bit.

Cheers,

Paul

Hmm, that is how it is supposed to work. The oil quality sensor should sense if there are new oil in the car and prolounge the service interval a little bit. However there is a max-limit on how long distance that can be driven before the FSS recommends a service, regardless if you conduct an in between oil change. Same is valid for a time period. If you f.e don't drive your car very much the FSS will call for a service before you've reached the distance limit.

So, if you are asking whether you could save money this way, I would say you can't. The cheapest way will be to go with the FSS recommendation.

There's an old adage: "pay now or pay later". Some people think the service intervals are already too long. Don't you want to maintain your expensive, quality vehicle? You could take the route my brother-in-law took w/ his Lincoln VSC a few years back. No one forces you to get service -- he basically never changed the oil and the engine was gone after about 60K miles.

Well, the Lincoln would have probably fallen apart shortly anyway.

i called my dealer to ask about changing the oil at 2000, 10000 (service A time) and then halfway between the scheduled service times. yes it would be a little bit of sticker shock but it's cheaper than replacing the car. however, the dealer told me that i don't need to change the oil for the first time until service A, and that i should never have to bring the car in for service unscheduled (unless something breaks, of course).

considering i've never driven a car with synthetic oil OR with such a long service interval, this is all foreign to me. i'm quite used to the dogma of 3000/3 months. is the dealer right, or should i change my oil now? i'm at 2050 miles.

Aircooled VWs that use a screen for an oil filter need to have the oil changed every 3000 miles. Use that as a reference...

The 3000/3months recommendation is typically proposed by the quick oil change places. No matter what car you drive or what your driving cycle is. I typically go 6000-7500 on my Jeep and it's gone 127,000 with zero engine problems.

yeah i guess so. what worries me is waiting until 9500-10000 miles to have my first change. the dealer said that "the modern MB engines don't have metallic buildup during break in like the old ones did"... uh... am i supposed to take his word for it? i mean i've never seen a dealer tell me to NOT bring it in before, but still.

I had the oil changed at 2500 miles for my own peace of mind. I'll probably go with the FSS from now on.

the whole when to change oil is definitely a hot topic on this forum... some people do change the oil before service A just for peace of mind... but even the dealer says that it not necessary. I don't usually change my oil every 3K miles on my other cars either because even the service manual on my old civic said something like 5K is when the oil should be changed.. don't quote me on th eactual mileage..but I know it was more than 3K....

It's a personal preferance... and I think I will stick to what FSS recomends
