break-in ??

break-in ??
Just got my New Mercedes and people tell me diff thing about break-in the car.. some said drive it under 50mi PH for 1000 mi.. some say as long as the RPM did not go over 5000 then is ok.. any idea which one i should follow?

Find the nearest drag strip and see what that baby will do. Break it in fast and it will be a fast car. Don't worry about RPM, my coupe has a limiter at 6,200 rpm and that was determined as safe by the people that make and guaranttee the car.

MB coupe.
The engineers that designed the drivetrain, had imput in the owners manual about break-in procedures. Have a look there and break it in with no guilt.
Buelly was only kidding, if you broke it in like he suggested, you might have some of the problems he is having with his car.

My sales rep and service advisor said to keep it under 1000 rpm's for the first 4000 miles. No wait, was it over 4000 rpm's for the first 1000 miles? No, no I'm sure they said under 4000 rpm's for the first 1000 miles
They also said not to drive at constant rpm's for long periods of time, and avoid full throttle acceleration. It is also a good idea not to putt around at low rpm's.

This has been discussed many times. Search for break-in on this forum and you will find lots of information. The important thing to remember is not to beat the crap out of it and not to baby it either. Go somewhere in between these extremes. You are not driving a lawn tractor you know so drive it like a car.

Additionally, the car is shipped from Germany with "break in oil", a blended fossil/synthetic mix. Even though the manuals and mechanics say not to worry about it, you might want to change to full synthetic oil after the car is broken in. I changed to Mobil1 at ~1500 miles (I was on a road trip when I turned 1k), and it's run smooth as butter ever since. I changed at 5k(paid) and 10k(free) and will continue to change oil and fileter element at 5k intervals.
