Attention COMAND owners.. 2003 C Class Comand changes!
In the current COMAND setup, you scroll through alphabets with the knob on the console, well now you will be able to use the steering wheel to scroll through the alphabets as well as other menu options!
Yay!
I was told this by the dealer when i went to check on my car's delivery timeframe.

well, actually, i don't think too many people have comand so it is probably an ignorance more than lack of interest.
greg230 has comand; try pm-ing him.

Yep, I also have Comand, and only the knob works.
I wish the "knob" was a joystick (similar to the ML's MCS system) - that would help on long names!
It would be great if a software upgrade added this.

Perhaps our COMAND guru Richard in the UK would be as kind as to offer a word on this?

Sadly for us here in Europe, MB are really bad at issuing s/w upgrades.
There have only been 2 s/w upgrades for the S/CL COMAND, and one for the normal COMAND. These are only installed by the dealer if you have voice recognition problems - and only applicable for MY2001 COMAND systems.
It should be noted though, that you can install the s/w upgrade on older COMAND systems, then you get the nice MB star when you turn on the display, and some SMS edit features, and a load of bugs fixed !! (However, it can cause the text to no longer be properly centered on the cluster display for COMAND functions)
I spent a year with a buggy comand system (MY2000) driving me mad by forgetting where the CD was playing from, a high volume beep when I ended phone calls etc - I persuaded my dealer to install a MY2002 one under warranty, which fixed my problems. The MY2001 s/w update wasnt available then.
I beleive that in the US, they issue s/w upgrades to all the dealers who will install them if asked nicely
I therefore suspect (guess) that sooner or later MB USA dealers will have a new version of s/w that does that stuff and can be retrofitted.
Us in Europe will probably have to wait for ever :-)

I am due to receive my c class for sep 1st. I have comand, integrated phone, 6 dc and Bose. What is your view on how good these are as I see conflicting views on here about comand etc and I would be interested in a view from someone in UK.
Thanks

Just called MBUSA, they confirmed that the COMAND system on the 2003 model year will be identical to the COMAND on the 2002 model year C-Class. They also told me that the company who makes the COMAND system for the C-Class has not changed either.

Am i mistaken in that assumption?

Lana, please confirm 2003 Command changes
From the starting thread post, does your 2003 C-Class Command in fact have the advanced software functionality you mentioned? I know there was some speculation on 2003 changes in software before delivery. Now that you have the car, what's the skinny on this?? I know it's still the same hardware, i.e., CD-ROM, not DVD-based, etc., but can you now scroll w/ the steering wheel buttons, or do you still use the knob? Any other changes?

my 2001 sedan had comand but i had a new comand unit put in last week b/c the volume knob's rubber came off... does that mean i have a new type of comand or do i have the same one i had before just new? doesn't make a difference to me, i actually bought comand so i wouldn't replace the hu with an aftermarket radio and speaker and amps and just draw current from the car... whenever i get the itch to go aftermarket audio, i remind myself how much extra the comand was, and the itch is gone

i use my comand all the time, and it works very well, regardless of ease of use for address entry. However, its predictive text helps save time entering in long names, and i have never had a problem finding streets i need.
My big complaint: cd based, orange colored map. Desperatly waiting for the clk to have dvd based nav
