exhaust

does anyone know if the muffler on the C230K actually do anything for emissions? because my friend (owns a mitsubishi 3000GT) had his removed and then had basically bent tubes flanged to the remaining section. it sounds SWEET and it only cost him about 250. thats WITH dual chrome tips. so yea i live in California where emission laws bite...

i always thought it was more of the catalytic converter that controls the emissions more than the muffler. but if u take off the muffler on the c230 coupe i can only imagine it will sound like sh*t.

my best advice to you is to buy a cat-back exhaust... if that's not loud enough, then take out the catalytics... but don't forget how a mercedes is... it'll tell you if it's pissed off, and by that i mean: i don't if taking that cats off will bring upon an array of malfunction readings on your dash.

Do not remove the cats. Removing them will not gain you anything, except a citation for emissions violations. The muffler (and resonator on non-C7 cars) has nothing to do with emissions. Change them as you like, but you might get a citation for excessive noise.

Lynn's right, trying to straight-pipe the system will work if you only plan to use your car on the track from that day forward. Straight-piping the exhaust may get some HP gains, but you have to consider what would fall within the legal limits of your area. If removing the muffler box doesn't get you ticketed, more power to ya.

yea on my friend's 3000GT it sounds great. it makes his V6 sound like a V8. And it still sounds quieter than some aftermarket exhausts WITH mufflers

Not to sound like a total idiot, but is the 3000GT a turbo??? Turbos do quite a bit to quiet things down.

I think the C230 sounds like crap the way it is (I have a C7 car and twice this week have had people comment on the "NVH issues" with it) and I would think it would sound even worse with no mufflers.

well there is a model of the 3000GT that has twin turbo (i think its the VR4) but my friend's car isn't. when he told me what he was going to do, at first i was really skeptical, but after i saw the result, what was left was a deep sounding V6. i'm tempted to try it but im kind of rethinking if it's right for "benz"
