Check Coolant Level!

Hey, recently I've been seeing "check coolant level" on the dashboard comp. I did check the coolant level, it seems like theres enough?

I shut off the car, turned it back on, its ok, no malfunctions, this happened twice, once during driving, and once during startup.

anything I should check for? should I add a lil more coolant? if so, I can use thos PRESTONE bottles ryte?

Fill your baby up w/ some windshield washer fluid. You are likely low.

Once you do this, the light will go away. It has happened to me and countless others.

That would show a message for washer fluid...not coolant.

The mystery is where did the coolant go? It doesn't get used up or evaporate. Unless you can point to a cracked resevoir, or a leaky hose, this likely means cracked block or head gasket(s). Good luck. I'd see the dealer. Maybe its just the sensor going to hell.

yeah im thinking it might be the sensor, I threw old cardboard under the car, to see if theres anything leaking, i spent 1/2 hr looking under the hood. so i'm assuming that the sensor is being :wwf:

I first thought it was something to do with the windshield fluid being low, I poured 2 gallons into it already (after the first time it came up) but the message came up again...

That's a different sensor.

If nothing shows up on the cardboard and the level drops, then you definately have a big problem. If the level stays the same, its the sensor.

Had the same problem, dealer replaced the sensor under warranty.

But I seem to remember people saying that the low washer fluid could trigger the coolant light as well. I know this doesn't sound like it makes sense... but hey, anything's possible. It's MB electronics. :D

You are correct. My coolant light would come on, but not my washer fluid light. That light would go off then a day later both (coolant and washer fluid) came on.

Do a search on this forum and you'll find other posts similar to this. It may be another problem, but try topping off your washer fluid.

I had a similar issue on my 02 C320 during the first year. I took it in to service twice before they finally fixed the problem. First time they replaced a sensor AND the HVAC unit in the dash. However, I would still get the "check coolant" message. What was causing the message was the temperature, not a lack of coolant (although it wasn't so hot that it was overheating). They finally replaced a bearing on the electric fan. That ended the problem.

I guess I should make a service appointment soon =T

I've been getting the "Coolant. Visit Workshop!" light almost daily on my 02
C320. It comes on intermittently. Sometimes it comes on after a few minutes of driving, and sometimes right on start-up. The level of coolant and the temperature of the engine are both within normal range. Any ideas as to what could be the cause?

yeuchau 12-10-2006 08:00 PM

you might just have bad sensor

Ryanr317 12-10-2006 09:27 PM

That's what im thinking.

Ryanr317 12-10-2006 10:45 PM

Anyone know which sensor could be involved in this?

yeuchau 12-11-2006 12:01 AM

i think there is a thing just called coolant sensor
cause my bimmer had those problems before

mleskovar 12-11-2006 12:05 PM

I've had the same symptom....once it was caused by low washer fluid (coolant and washer fluid sensors are on the same circuit)....and twice by low fluid - even though it "looked" pretty full. The proper level is "the coolant should reach the black part on the top of the resevoir". Usually you see an air gap in resevoirs...not this one.

Ryanr317 12-11-2006 03:52 PM

The levels are up. Its saying to visit the workshop rather than to check the level.

Just a question here, this is not at all related to the dodgy Valeo radiator? Just got the message yesterday
