I ues Superbrightleds, and I tried them in the license plate and they flicker but in the dome lights in the interior they dont. I though they have resistors built in ? Thats what superbrightleds say. Can I buy autoillumination icadasent bulbs not xenon and use them in the licence plates without using resistors or burning, melting the wires ? I heard one person had a problem with autoillumination but has anyone else been sucessful with there regular blue bulb ?

Autoillumination...their bulbs burn out as quick as hell. I have had eBay bulbs with better results than the regular incandescent bulbs from AutoIllumination.

I had the amber "chrome domes" from autolumination on my M3--I HATED them. They were dull and really weren't too amber. I replaced them with Philips Silvervisions and never looked back...

I just got them today.

honestly, they're "ok." not too impressive, but not too bad either. mediocre is a good description.

the fitment isn't perfect (they're smaller than oem), and they get hot as hell (I hope they don't burn my plastic lenses).

they look a LOT better in the pictures. to the human eye, in person, they're not that great.

they don't compare to LED's. I had the real deal LED's on this car and (when they worked) they looked waaaaay better. they can't compare to the LED's I have on my M. but, since this is all we've got, there's nothing really we can do and this'll have to do.

here are some pics to illustrate.

the new bulbs:

LED's on my M3:

comparison shot (yes the MB is photoshopped a bit to blank out my license plate, I didn't have an extra cover):

and, this is what the LED's look like when they're "off" (they stay on a bit b/c the power consumption is so low and they draw a tiny bit through the car's accessory power):

man, I wish LED's would work in the w203...

as for the "xenon" backup lights, no way in hell I'm installing those. they're too blue and you can see the blue right through the lens when they're off. forget that, especially for something that will only be on rarely.

sorry to hear that you werent as satisfied with the bulbs as luxuryc240 and i were. but for the price, you can't complain. i thought it was a big difference from stock bulbs and didnt give your car that dull yellow look

Right...he definitely has LEDs cuz they are dimly lit....the ones that you and I got aren't...he may have thought he had the same as ours, thats why I said that...

Outer, yes that is the sucky part, which means when they go we have to buy a new set of bulbs to go in there....if mine ever go out, I might try to put some LEDs with resistors...but hopefully they don't go out...

The ones I got from ebay are NOT LED's. Read the post carefully. I was clearly and explicitly comparing them to LED's and how they can't even compare to LED's.

I think I know what the difference is between LED's and normal bulbs. Look at the very beginning of this thread, you'll see that I've been trying to get a solution to this situation even before you got your car or got to this board.

I agree that they're a decent price and $16 really isn't going to break my wallet. but, I could really care less about the price on these things. you don't know how much I've spent trying to get LED's to work on the w203.

let's see, and lets give you newbs a history lesson:

$25 for LED's with built in resistors from DION that went out after a few months.
$15 for LED bulbs from eBay, $15 for resistors, $5 for wire taps, $5 for electrical wire. one side worked perfectly, the other did not.
$10 for random "xenon" look bulbs that didn't work at all from autolumination.
$16 for these things.

AND as a comparison, how much did I spend on the LED's for my M3?

here:
I reused the $15 LED's from eBay that didn't work on the w203, they blew out after 3 months.
I spent $25 shipped for the LED license plate bulbs from jlevisw, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they won't blow out any time soon.

You do realize that $80 more bucks on top of all this money you spent on trying to make LED's work would've gotten you some springs to drop your damn car!...LOL.

Oh well, guess it doesn't matter now, but just thought I'd point it out to you, bro.

Psssh. You have resources now, buddy! $300 install? Common man, you know we wouldn't let you spend that much on a install for springs, EVER!...hahahaha.

Do all BMW's come with LED plate lights? Or is that a mod?

MB needs to get with it with the bling!

no, it's a mod. virtually everything else on the rear of my M3 (turn signals and brakes) are LED's (except the backup lights, which I really don't care about). the only company that uses LED license plate lights stock is Lexus.

MB definitely needs to get with the bling! I wish we had OEM LED tails for the w203!

Speaking of LED tails, I could never find led that are not the S class style tails.

they don't even make them. and the S-Class LED tails all end up failing/burning out after a while so they're not really worth it.
