Honestly whats wrong with bringing up old threads especially since the input is good to read? I came onboard after someone brang this old thread up..I prefer this old thread popping up then wasting the bandwith creating a new one. There are others in this forum who never seen or read about this and may seach for it one day...

PS. They're not incandescent colored bulbs, they're not LED's either. MUAHAHAHAHHAHA
Hey e1000 I haven't followed this thread since beginning can you tell me is it the light on the right of the picture? If so are they still working fine? Are these the Hoen lights I keep seeing mentioned in these last pages? TIA

The monster has awaken AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting timing.

Anyway, to answer your question, no, what I have on my car are not Hoen's, nor are they LED. They are CCFL's (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lights). Just imagine a TINY fluorescent light bulb that's about 3mm in dia. Wasn't an easy mod at all, and I am pleased to say that they're still going. They not only require resistors but inverters, and installation requires soldering, drilling, and taking your whole trunklid apart.

To date, the only things that have worked are the Hoens, although I've personally had bad luck with them. ALL other LED lights have failed in one way or another. The Hoens also produce a pretty dim light. They are whiter than stock, but nowhere near what LED's or stock Lexus/BMW lights look like.

With that said. (oh boy am I going to regret this)...........

I am working with certain members of this thread to work out a solution. If successfull, it will close this once and for all. It will be LED based, and it will be a simple drop in solution. Light output is absolutely fantastic.

So, you can either wait a little longer until we feel comfortable saying we actually have something that will work, or you can buy the Hoens.

Not going to happen

Sorry guys, it's not going to happen without taking the lining off and putting resistors onto the stock wiring harness.

So, to bring you guys up to speed, I got it to a point where I found resistors that were small enough to tuck behind the LED's inside the plastic housing. Well, they ended up getting so hot that it melted part of the housing, melted the LED's and one of the resistors even molded itself into the housing.

Essentially, if you want the LED license plate bulbs, you will have to tap the wires in the trunklid. No way around it. Sorry guys, I tried.

Been reading this thread (most, but not all 16 pages) and wondered if anyone is using lights from this site, especially the kits for H7's http://superbrightleds.com/

The problem with using LED's for replacements on 55W bulbs are that they just don't produce enough lumens. For example, the LED H7's MIGHT use 2w-3w at the most and probalby produce about 1/10th the light output of a normal incandescant bulb. The best replacement for a H7 type bulb is a HID kit.

As for the license plate bulbs, a resistor will be needed and they cannot fit within the bulb housing itself. This means that you'll have to take the trunklid lining off to do the mod. You'll also need the correct resistor, and then the LED's will work. I'm going to do some research and lookup a good way to do this mod. As of right now, I think it's too difficult to do the way I did MJ50 and nlpamg's car today. Just give me a couple days guys...

hey eric,

are you down here right now? man, i haven't learned how to solder the resistor/wires to the front turn signals yet, and learning from you would be pretty cool.

@valexv: that is no problem, but it would only be worthwhile if you then immediately sent a large quantity

Here is a link to view the site translated from German, but how are these better than the other site which is US based?
