MB Oil Filter vs. Joe-Shmoe Oil Filter

I just took my car over to my local mechanic to get my "Service A" done. Really, the only crucial part of this service is the oil change and oil filter change so I figured there was no reason to take it to the stealership. The stealership quoted over 200 dollars for that type of service which I thought was ludacris. The mechanic recommended I just go with the standard oil filter that they had there, but I was reluctant because a MB Service Rep recommended I go with the official MB oil filter. I was in a time crunch and told the mechanic to just put in his standard oil filter. Is there a difference when it really comes down to it? Will I notice a difference? Will it be bad for my car? I'm a bit concerned but I know you guys will have the right answer.

Thanks!

does your mechanic have a "standard" mesh oil filter? I thought the point was to have a special oil filter that would let you last at least 10k miles...

This vehicle requires MB 229.3 oil with the conventional filter, or MB 229.5 oil may be used, but that REQUIRES the fleece filter.

Go to your dealer and get a filter for you car, I think the charge around $12 and replace it yourself, it's on top and is easy to do. I even think someone posted pictures of the procedure.
Good Luck Jkw

200 dollars for your oil chage...

When i used to have my ML320 i would take it in for its oil change... AND totally complain that an oil change should not cost 220 dollars. I would ask what that 200 dollars would get me. Top up my fluids and look at my brakes and a couple of other random checks.

I would deny all the other stuff. Oil change would come out to 90 dollars. AND since they were all ready under there, they would check everything anyways. :-) of course they want to check other stuff, they need to SELL you the list of things to fix.

Once i took the ML in for its oil chnage, paid the 90 dollars, and they found MASS things that needed to be fixed. ALL WARANTEE ITEMS... they fixed them, and i got the same service as the 220 dollar oil change for the price of 90.

I would probably not take the benz to some little shop, just becuase of you dont know if they are using the MOBILE 1 and oil filter for synthetic oil (if there is even a difference).

I used these oil filters which I bought from someone else on Ebay. Here's a reference:

Oil change is quite easy and I didn't even have to get under the car. Use an oil extractor. I wrote some instructions and someone else did on the forum. Don't want to open up a new Thread for this. I think we can close this one.

I just did an oil change myself today. $15 for the filter, $35 for the oil (including NY sales tax). Its pretty easy, had a hard time getting the filter assembly apart, my hands kept slipping becuse they were covered in oil! Its nice not having to get under the car to do this.
