WHAT'S the BOX behind the inside rearmirror
Hi all,
I have a grey box behind the rearmirror (inside mirror) what is it? Radio antenna? predisposition for GPS antenna? Predisposition for rear mirror anti dazzle? THX. My car is cl203 (c 220 cdi sportcoupè) a pic http://www.escuolaonline.com/public/mb/3.jpg |
Its the rain sensing wiper.
Unless you are talking about the Box ATTACHED to you're rear view mirror, then those are the electronics for dimming the mirror at night. |

and light sensor as well. Cars pre 04 have separate light and rain sensors. Cars 04 and later have a combined rain and light sensor.

If the mirror is an auto-dimming mirror, the rear of the housing is thicker than most other cars because there is a liquid inside. The liquid dims the reflections at night in response to the amount of light striking it. It dims slowly, but when you select reverse it quickly brightens to reveal a clear image behind you. If you have three buttons on the bottom of the mirror, they are a UHF transmitter for opening a garage door, entrance gate, and porch light. Some cars have a wee amber LED projecting a soft down light on the console area.
If you have a GPS antenna, it is usually under the dash pad, on top of the instrument cluster. The teleaid or roadservice communication system is located in the trunk, with switch and mic in the domelight switch, and its own speaker(s) separate from the car audio in the kick panels or doors. |
The GPS antenna is NEVER fitted under the Dash from factory. Only on retrofits. Factory location is the rear glass.
