A/C problems...PLEASE HELP!
I just bought a 2001 C240 and wanted to ask you all in the "Know" about a few issues I have. The A/C works well when your moving, if it's not to hot, and I don't use the automatic feature. But, when you stop or if you're at idle it blow HOT air out, not the least bit cool! I'm hoping this isn't normal, and there is a fix for it... I used the search function, and didn't find anything related to this... I took the car to the dealer last week for the musty smell (said they couldn't do anything, and I should spray lysol in it), and an alignment for pulling to the right, which didn't help at all... now I've read other post on here, and I guess that's normal. I asked them to see why it idles a little rough, not really bad, just seems to be a little miss... they charged $300.00 to change two plugs and two plug wires, and it's still the same. The A/C is the most annoying issue I've got, what with living in cental Florida and the past few days have been in the 90's... it's terrible at red lights! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Tim

Might as well get used to it. I live in central Florida, too, and have had all three issues you mentioned (but not the rough idle). It's why I won't be owning another MB after this one. Which dealer did you take it to?
An alignment took care of the pulling for me.
I always use a sunshade in the front windshield when I park and put up the rear window sunshade. I drop the back windows to pull out hot air when I first start the car and drive away from work in the afternoons. I did find that using the auto feature works better at cooling the car when I first use the a/c but then switch back to normal. I also have found that leaving the rear sunshade up helps the a/c cool the car better. The problem I have is that I only live a couple of miles from work so the car never really cools down before I get home. You may want to consider tinting the windows to cut down on the heat from the sun.
If you search the forums you will find that others have had the smell problem and depending on the dealer there have been attempts at fixes but most people seem to have the problem come back. I have never taken mine in for the smell.
Good luck.

There are some cars that drop the AC clutch if the engine is running too slow, or the ECU thinks that you are asking for more power. That may be why your losing AC at the lights. Drop into neutral, and give a bit of gas to 1200 rpm and see if the compressor kicks in. Besides bad plugs, the MAF and crankshaft position sensor seem to have a lot of trouble. There is a CRC spray for cleaning the dirt off the MAF, and if you have 60,000 or more miles, you should consider it.
There are antifungal sprays for stinky evaporators. There are any number of "real" AC shops in Florida that have these chemicals that can kill the varmits in the dash.
Most likely your car is out of warranty, but there are some "goodwill" exceptions made to change evaporators in very stinky cars. If the dealer pretends he knows nothing, get in touch with MB Corporate, if you are patient and polite they might get you a new evaporator.
To keep the stinks out of the system, I find that monthly application of the kritter killer is necessary in the tropics. Here is a service I found in Florida.
