1.8 kompressor engine noise?
My 03 (1.8 kompressor) coupe has done just over a 1,000 miles. But I have two concerns on engine noise.
1. Tickover could be smoother, there seesm to be a soft tapping. is this the 16v engine? (i previously had a 20v audi)
2. When accelerating (gently) there is a high pitched whirring. I assume this is the supercharger. but it does seem quite noisy and almost as if the car is revving high before the auto transmission decides to go up a gear.
Am I paranoid? is this normal. Have I done too few miles before it should settle down. Anyone with experience of this new engine, had similar concerns?

tickover noise
I'm not sure about the ticking noise at idle (tickover - I love that word) - could be any number of things from fuel injector solenoids (which I don't think you'd hear from inside the car) to valve clearances to various less pleasant things. Go to your M-B dealer and ask them about it - at least that will document your concern, should it later develop into a real problem.
The whirring sound is indeed the supercharger spooling up. Get used to this noise when you're on the throttle hard, as they all do it. When you know what's causing the noise, it becomes enjoyable, perhaps like the sound of a Honda VTEC engine hitting 5500 rpm...
I just thought of one other thing - perhaps this noise could be the "purge valve" that was replaced on many W203 cars, especially from the first year's production.
