Autobahn

I recently took a quick trip to Germany for work, while I was there I rented a Mercedes A 1.8, not a bad little car, cruised the Autobahn @ 180 KPH.
But Big Audi's & BMW passed me like I was standing still, It would have been nice to drive one of them, or my own C230, still it was fun.
Just wanted to share.

Sounds like fun, but you should've rented a faster car.

when doing 180kmh you get passed a lot...when doing 210kmh you get passed a lot less...when doing 230kmh there isn't that much that passes you anymore...

one of the reasons to make sure your wintertires are good up to 210kmh as less will only get you caught in traffic

Starting around 220km/h it becomes very interesting. But then again no one who sees the Autobahn for the first time should ever do that, because chances are you have no idea of how to safely drive at that speed.

At 250km/h then, its usually only a Porsche passing you who got rid of that electronic limiter.

This past December I had the oppotunity to drive from Coesfeld (near the German border with the Netherlands) to Frankfurt in a C220Cdi with the Avantgarde package (Sport in the US). This turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip (after the wintermarkets, gluewein, brauhauses, etc.).

Following a BMW 3-series wagon, we were clicking along between 180-230kph, depending on traffic & conditions. After crossing 200kph, things really do start getting serious in the cockpit; and at 230kph I felt like I was back at Road Atlanta - full concentration, radio off.

I have to say that I was really impressed with how solid the wagon was, and how well the oil-burner ran at high speeds. It could loaf along easily around town, and then rip up the highway like a gas-engined car.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
The rest of us wagon owners are just schlepping when contrasted with that beauty of a wagon Steve has turned out. Inside and out, it is possibly the best C class on the road. He is also lucky he can drive it at speed. I am in Beijing for a few weeks, and have not hit 40 Kmh yet! I think even the grill on my car fell asleep in traffic on Friday.

Haha I hit 210 kmh here in Beijing in a W220 on the way to Huairou
The expressways here has a limit but you know when they do not have those speed cameras here.

Steve did an awesome job on his Wagon, perhaps one of the fine example!
I was impressed on how he dismantle my dashboard in my C320!

When it was my turn to drive on the Autobahn there was traffic!!

An RUF Porsche is just bananas on that highway. I mean, I see why the Germans built AMG/M-Series/S-Line cars... I don't get why Acura built A-Spec ....Just kidding.

We can never have that in the U.S., because I know for sure, half of the people on this forum alone, when they see a car flash lights behind (first 50% of those people won't understand why), and the rest will try and speed up. They don't realize it's not a race, people are just too vain. And by the way, if we had it in the U.S., I'd never go on it!!!

Driving school in the US is a joke, seriously. Although the law states that slower traffic HAS TO BE on the right lanes they still drive 60mph on the very left. Here in Florida with all the snowbirds its even worse.

Oh yeah, it's terrible. Sometimes I'm behind someone in the left lane and I high-beam, low-beam and they start braking and putting up their fingers at the rear view mirror....

And don't get me wrong, I'm not doing 90MPH, I'm doing like 55-60MPH, still in the speed limit, yet some people want me to go around? What idiots are these?!

don't even get me started on those drivers.
those slow cars don't even move after a whole procession of cars steer around them and they get a chance to change lanes.
daily wtf moments on the 405 in LA

People like that make me want to go out and buy some old tank of a car,
say a 1977 Olds Delta 88 and just ram into the them. I mean, after all, thats what the seem to want, they're in the fast lane, and putting on the brake for no reason right?
They're saying "hey, could you please reform my rear bumper for me? I'm a f'in idiot, and I want to die. "

I'd be happy to oblige.
