cat converter?

I search the threads and I think that the secondary cat doesn’t cause the check engine light to turn on but the primary cat does?

I have a 2003 c230k ss with 110k miles and that check engine light is killing me. They want an arm and a leg to do it at the dealership.

I read up but I would like some input on universal cats, will it rust out or anything? Has anyone else had the "inefficient catalytic converter code"? Which cat is giving me the check engine light? Will it make the cars performance go up or down and will it get louder? How much were you guys charged and should I get the resonator removed?

im poor and I really don’t want it anywhere near a dealership because of past experiences.

thanks guys

Yes, your right the secondary cat doesnt cause a check engine light because there are no oxygen senors for that cat. Some people delete that cat anyway just to get a deeper tone. Unfortanlty its the primary cat causing your check engine light(as long as thats the code that is coming up) The reason I say unfortantley is because the exhaust manifold and cat are one peice. This is only on US spec cars, lucky us, right. I dont see there being to many options on how to replace the primary cat since its not seperate. You might want to go to a good machine shop and see if they can cut out the old cat and weld in a new one of your choice. I believe our diameter piping is 2.5 (double check on that though).
Keep us updated so we know our options when our cat is clogged.

Another other option is to do what I did, get the Kleemann header and highflow cat. They are seperate from each other. They are/were having a 50% off sale, not so sure if there are any left now? Since your car has 110k mile you wont have any warranty issues. I think it might even be better for your car since the engine will breathe much better?
Yet antoher option is to contact Drex and ask him about the after market header and cat he has.
Well anyway good luck and keep us posted.
