I didn't know about the shifter technique on the 03. Anyone not smug enough to tell me more?

It works like this: Normally you can tip the shifter to the left to downshift (ie. go from D-4-3-...) in steps of one gear at at time and to the right to upshift, right? Holding the shifter to the left, makes the tranny select the lowest possible gear (for max acceleration or max engine brake). Holding it to the right makes the tranny go into Drive again (without any need for going through 1-2-....) Got it? It's all in the user's manual you know

this comes up on an mbnet report that is run every time your vehicle comes in shop ,,or at least should be .
and is a campaign,,,not a recall,,and not a tsb.
a product update would probably describe it best

I have an '03 and my girlfriend has an '02. Both Auto trannies. I know my '03 does the optimal gear choice thing. I have yet to try it on the '02.
On a side note. I recently found out (by reading the manual) that the recirculate button on the climate control will open/close the windows and the sunroof. That's integration!
My 03 doesn't have the fresh air wheel between the center dash vents like the 02 does.
Still not sure if the "Rest" feature fully works on the 03. The button isn't labeled and there is no indicator for it. It will however turn the fan on. Just not sure if will pull any heat from the engine.

the recirculation button feature is called "tunnel mode", useful for when you are (obviously) going through tunnels.
