Post W203 service Interval/oil reset

After reading some posts on how to reset the service indicator I went to my w203 (03 C230) and tried the process (yeah yeah, I do plan to change the oil today).
The procedure explained by others is almost right but not complete.
Here it is in simple and complete terms.

1. Get in the car. Close the doors
2. Move ignition key to position B (just before starting engine). Do not start the engine
3. Using the up and down arrow keys on the steering wheel move to the display that shows the miles left till the next service
4. double click on the reset button (in less than 1 sec) on the dash display.
5. Note the message asking you to hit the reset button again to reset the service counter.
6. At this point you need to press and HOLD the reset button down for >10 sec. Then the service counter will reset to 10000 miles.

Note: This of course does not mean the car does the service for you. You or a well qualified and honest mechanic need to inspect all items related to the recommended services for the A and B campaigns.

Myth Busted. Yes YOU CAN RESET it on w203 too.

If you go back to page 1, the oil extractor I bought is pretty good. I think they are all made by 1 or 2 companies in Asia and branded differently.

I got my oil filter from autohausaz.com

One other question that I can't seem to find....what is the socket that I need to take the oil filter off? Is it 24 mm? Either way i have a day or two before I do it.....Thanks in advance.

If you have the M271 engine: 27mm (6 point) for oil filter socket and torque it to 18 ft lb (24 Nm).

05 C230 Kompressor
Thanks to Taiwanese and SunnyRayToronto and everyone else who contributed to this thread. I have a 2005 C230 Kompressor and have had it since it's birth in late 2004. This was the first time I ever changed the oil myself. The dealer did all of the A and B services up until last night. I used a Topsider extractor, a 27 mm socket for the oil filter, 6 quarts of 0W-40 229.5 MB approved Mobil 1, and the oil filter from the dealer that only costed 15 dollars........

It took roughly 30 minutes to extract all of the oil out, at times the tubing would get kinked due to the suction so I found myself moving the tube inside the dipstick port in and out to see if I was up against something or if I was done. I did cut a small 45 degree angle on the end of the tube to keep from having it getting stuck against a wall or the bottom of the pan on a flat surface. I found that the I only filled up a little less than 5 quarts of oil. I guess I'm with a few others on this thread, that I feel I didn't get everything out, so I spent another 20 minutes past trying to make sure everything was out. I know that this time, I never got a reading to add 1 quart of oil before my Service B interval. So I'm thinking I was right under that time as almost 50 percent of the time I was given a message to add a quart of oil before my oil changes.

I am confident that my oil changes will be more frequent from here on out.....thanks to all of you on this forum.

One other question I have is what other maintenance DIY can be done? What fluids are needed and where can I get them?

Thanks again!

You are welcome. We are all here to help each other with deals and how-to.

Other than oil change, you can also change the air filter yourself.

Coolant Zerex G05 can be found at Kragen Auto Parts.

I posted a spark plug DIY here as well.

If you don't have any tools, then you need to buy the following:
27mm socket (or you can buy this tool from MB, I think it's $26)
1/2" drive universal joint
1/2" drive ratchet
1/2" extension 4" long

If you have some tools in 3/8" drive, then you just need:
27mm socket (only in 1/2" drive)
1/2" male to 3/8" female

use your own:
3/8" universal joint
3/8" ratchet
3/8" extension 4" long
Is the Mobil 1 0w40 synthetic or non synthetic? I was at PepBoys today and saw the synthetic.

All Mobil 1 is synthetic but not all Mobil 1 is 229.5 approved - Only 0W-40 Euro formulation.

Where's good place to buy oil? I would say a bulk for stocking. Pepboys wants $7.50 each. Funny thing is this is cheaper than what the stealership charges. But then again, i doubt they puchase by bottles, but more like drums.

at walmart its about $6/qt.
pep boys also has a sale going on:
5 qts mobil 1 and a mobil 1 filter fpr $29.99.
since mobil doesnt make filters for our cars, i get 5 qts of 0w-40 and i pick up a filter for my motorcycle. not bad for 30 bucks.

If you have an O'Riley's in they area, they periodically put on sale for about $6. Between them and Walmart, I'm covered.

Okay, I did the oil change again today.

Strange thing happened though. The "tip" of the filter holder (the 5cm long piece with the 2 small O-rings) detached from the filter housing (piece with the 3rd large O-ring) and got stuck inside the engine housing. Screwing the housing back into the engine and unscrewing again didnt' work, as the housing did not catch the clips that normally hold the tip in place. I had to extract the stuck piece with a pair of needle nose pliers, and got oil all over the @#%*!! engine bay as a result.

Anybody else have this problem, and is there a way to prevent it from happening again? I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong..

Oil filter stem is a single long piece. Look at the attached picture. The tip must've broken off on your car. You may have to buy the filter holder with the stem, shouldn't be that expensive.

I have a '03 C240 and I have been using the Mobil 1 High Performance 5w30 with the Mann filter. I need to do another oil change in the next hundred miles.. should I be using 0w40?

Also, has anyone used a BG oil supplement to restore compression and remove carbon deposits?
