CEL Mixture too rich, bank #1

hey all, did a search to no avail- i've got a CEL that says "mixture too rich, bank #1", i cleared it, but within 50 or 100 miles or so, it came back on, same code. any ideas on what could be causing this, besides the obvious fact that there is too much fuel in cylinder (bank) #1? any help is appreciated.....

You should be specific, are you geting a P0172? That would mean your MAF is dirty. Clean it with MAF sensor cleaner. There's plenty of info on the forum on how to do this. Takes at most 15 minutes and you do it from under the hood so no crawling around. The trick is to clean the gold colored wire at the tip with a strong blast of cleaner. I did it on my kid's SLK230, same motor and it hasn't come back in over a year. If money is no object, you can buy a new MAF at the dealer but they are not cheap.

thank you so much. i'm going to try doing just that. i have the M111 engine, so i beleive the MAS is before where i have the water/methanol injection nozzle positioned.... its rather easy to get to.

Easier on the newer M111 motors like yours, it's right on top before the TB. On the 1998 M111, it's buried next to the hot radiator but still a 15 min job. You may need a security torx bit to get the insert out of the MAF housing but you need to get it out to clean. This problem is usually from using inferior aftermarket air filters or yours is past it's life. Maybe a good time to throw a new air filter panel in there.
