Anyone know a good place in socal? To take the car?

I see you're in Oceanside. I've had very good service from MB of Escondido. It's not too far from you. One of their perks is they provide a loaner vehicle (MB C-class) with all service, regardless of if you purchased from them or not (Hoehn in Carlsbad only gives MB if you purchased from them). They charge about $20, but it includes about 1/2 tank of gas, so not a bad deal.

So i just go to MB in Escondido and drop my car off and they will give me a loner car? Sounds really good but would they give it to a 20 year old? Do they charge for a Check engine light reading? To pull the codes.. From pulling off the air box on the left side of the motor a few of the plugs have some type of liquid on them. ( Spark plug caps ) Car just doesn't sound right =*(

krisv420 09-03-2008 11:07 PM

I also saw this. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94169

If you just want to pull the codes, go to Autozone and rent a scanner. They will charge you full price to borrow it, then credit full price back to you when you return it. When they've been slow, I've also been able to talk them into letting me just use it in the parking lot (I live in a small town where everone knows everyone).

Cars are smart enough these days that if the engine starts to overheat or something else is going on, the computer will put the vehicle into 'limp mode'. You might start it up again after things have cooled down to see if there's still a CEL (if not, the code should still be stored). Of course, there had to be a problem to trigger this event in the first place ... but you could just be low on coolant or oil. Good Luck!!

...or just BUY a scanner.
Sounds like a bad coil pack.

krisv420 09-04-2008 07:49 AM

Well im not gonna go to work. Gonna see what i can get done today with the car. Gonna go and start it in 2 hours and see what happens.

Its just odd i was low on gas so i go to the station. Fill up a half a tank go drive for 1 mile and now this happened.

aecasasus 09-04-2008 09:02 AM

Was your fuel tank full or almost empty? Maybe went to limp mode starving for fuel? Just a thought and something for you to look into or discard. Hope you find the problem soon...

Sorry to hear that! Hope it's nothing too big or expensive. Maybe the coils or plugs, hopefully not a rod or cylinder head gasket. Good luck and keep us posted!

Funny thing with the oil level check is :
a. It won't do it with the engine cold.
b. It won't it with the engine running
c. It won't do it right after the engine is shut off.

You have to have had the engine running, and then shut it off for a few minutes.
If it says perf serv on time, you need to wait a little longer and do it again.

krisv420 09-04-2008 09:04 PM

Took of the air box on the car on the left side of the motor.. i was looking at spark plug caps and i go down to touch one of the caps and there is fresh OIL on two of the caps.

Not good!! I would NOT try and start this car again. Ticking noises are typically a sign of something potentially serious. I have a sick feeling just reading this post and looking at the pics..Keep us posted!

Agree but i would still perform a compression test. Cheap check-up that might guide you on the right direction and give you a feel of what's going on. Keep us posted..

I'm wondering if the oil on the spark plug wires isn't having some sort of affect on spark to those particular cylinders. That is of coures if the oil is on the wire down where it plugs onto the spark plug itself. Oil sitting on a wire loom isn't going to affect anything, but if its in where connections are being made, that may be a problem. I think your first ordeal should be to find out where the oil is coming from and fix that first. That and check your oil level (due to the ticking noise you say you hear). Good luck. Also, def. let us know what you find, I have the identical car, so it maybe something I or other people may need to look out for.

Oil on the plug cable CAN affect and could as well play part on what's happening here. The oil softens the cable and penetrates it creating low resistance, and could end up shorting the plugs and/or the coil. The oil is a big problem since it's not supposed to be there(very true), but at this time, he might have a bigger problem (like a bent rod) that needs to be found first. It might not be worth spending the money fixing the oil leak if the engine is not good. I beleive he needs to find out where the knocking sound and loss of power is before he starts fixing anything else...

Again, it could as well be a bad coil (like some members mentioned)or cable due to the oil, dropping a cylinder ir two so...troubleshoot first, invest in repairs later.

Just my $.02

True, didn't think about it that way. When you say bent rod, you mean connecting rod, right? Cause these car's don't have push rods.
