Charcoal Canister
So, the CEL light came on yesterday. My car is out of warranty, but I took it to the dealer anyways. They did a diagnostic and something was wrong in the fuel system. They said something about a "charcoal canister" leaking that was part of a process in which the car recirculated unburned fuel for emissions. I was quoted about $520 parts and labor (minus a 20% discount).
Has anyone had this in the past? Anyone know?

i've had one go bad (not in my MB) and i've also had one of the lines that goes to it rot and cause an error.
http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h62.pdf that explains what they do a little bit better. it's not uncommon for them to need to be replaced or replace the plastic/rubber lines that are connected to them.....at least in the many other cars i have worked with.

Nlpamg, did the service qoute say what OBD code came up?
$520 for replacing a canister. Uhhh, how about not. Since I don't have your engine, I can't say how hard or easy it would be to replace. But I do have a code reader should the code come back.

yup, the stealer replaced the charcoal canister...
I was able to talk them down to doing it for $380 with a loaner car for 2 days. Also, I got them to goodwill some peeling I had in the center console, so I guess it wasn't too bad.
now, the car is running somewhat rough at idle. I may have to enlist your guys' help to put in new spark plugs.
