help! engine popping =( Videos
hey guys, so on Thursday, I drove my car to school which takes 20 minutes and everything was fine, no noise or no CEL.. I park my car and when I came back from class and turned on my car, my car just starting shaking and the CEL came on..saying Visit ESP workshop.. The car was shaking bad, and there was popping noises. I was confuse cause i drove to school and everything was fine, but all the sudden this happened. I couldn't drive it, therefore i towed it to the dealer.
The dealer called me back and said that they cant read my car.I was confused why they cant read my car. They said it shows " no data" =( ..the only mods that I have are ; pulley kit, ECU tune, exhaust and airbox. So Im thinking that the ECU tune caused the "no data " readout. Now I towed my car back to my house, cant drive..sitting there...Can anyone help? I uploaded some vids... Thanks
PS I've tried to clean the MAF already..

holy crap...it sounds some kind metal grinding like there's no oil in there or something. Ecu tune shouldn't effect your cel codes..unless the tune was bad. But you should've been able to tell its a bad tune right away because your car would've performed like crap.
hope it works out.

thats crazy... did you try unplugging the battery, etc.
I had a huge vibration from the engine, (My engine mounts collapsed), I had recently had a ESP visit workshop, it was a ECU issue, I've never had that "constant popping/revving" thats just weird....

lip mode is horrible, had that on a c280 loaner once, it just drives on like 1st/2nd gear.
it might be the ecu software configuration that has a problem? it seems like the engine is fine right? its just this constant acceleration?
maybe its the throttle control sensor?

Okay, we need to start thinking systematically here.
You drove it to school, all was well, you come back, and you get this.
My first thought is someone poured something into your tank.
However, your exhaust vid looks a bit wet. So I wonder if somehow you popped the head gasket in some way.
I wonder if the dealer told you no codes, simply because they don't want to touch this problem.
So, get an OBD II code reader and see if you can get the codes.
Do not run the car, do not turn it on anymore.
If you are uncomfortable getting the codes, find an independent shop to help you with this.
<--never heard a car sound like this....

Years ago I owned a VW Passat with the VR6 that had this happen, where it would rev up and then nearly die. It turned out to be a split in the intake boot after the MAF. As it revved up, it was letting in a big wad of unmetered air, going lean, dropping back in revs ... and closing the crack in the boot! Replaced the boot and all went back to normal. It didn't set any codes, which might be what they are seeing.

wow
It sounds almost like the timing is messed up, kind of like a two stroke engine where the iddle speed needs to be adjusted...
Hope it works out bro.

my first inkling is bad ecu... I know of two other cars who have had fried ECUs after SI tunes. And not right away... both took time before they went bad.
If it was a bad head gasket the exhuast would smell VERY sweet and would be billowing white smoke or doing small little puffs running like that after some time... check the coolant resevoir, if there is oil in there... bad head gasket. Also a head gasket would not come up like that all of a sudden... the only time they appear so quickly is if you have a cataclysmic size failure under load... say racing a car and you push your car too hard and BOOM, smoke comes out of the engine bay and instantly your car runs like trash, and you provide smoke screan for everyone behinds you... I know Ive experienced it... the other is a slow developing leak in the gasket... but that means the car would get worse over time. wouldnt appear just like this.
But since it was driving fine a little bit earlier in the day, I would look at getting the ECU replaced. Unless there is physical damage to the gas tank area, I doubt someone poured anything in there. In the case it was bad gas? The dealer would be able to plug in and scan the car still... if they are reporting that there is no connectivity to the car, it points at one item alone... and that is the brain of the system.

I was also thinking this. Just enough fuel to keep it running, kinda just sputtering. I also noticed in your one video that you have your MAF off. It almost sounds as if it's backfiring out of the intake? I hear some kind of popping coming out of there. I believe you may have a mis-fire issue, or someone else mentioned, a timing issue.

both owners had there ecu's replaced, one was done under warranty... and the other was paid for by SI
