HOLY ISH...my car won't go

So I pop in my car and rushing to get to work on time...and then I hear my engine revving up when I get to 40mph and it wont go any faster...seems like it wont shift out of 2nd or 3rd gear it also wont let let me manually shift to 4th either(me has the autmatic). So I shut the beast down and start her up again and try to do the manual shift an surprise it works and my car happy again...hitting the gym this morning....same ****(pardon my french). I am thinking a faulty spark plug...spoke with my mechanic he thinks it could be a simple computer problem or the trany..yikes. Anyone had this happen?

no, but its not a spark plug. What makes you think that?

I was thinking a computer glitch too. Especially if a re-boot fixes it.

Oil in the harness? It's really impossible to guess without
you eliminating the more common things 1st, and at least
taking a look.

It's going into limp mode. Get a scanner onto it and find out what codes it's throwing. Restarting reboots the ECU, TCU etc.

Hey - you can buy a scanner from Kragens for 70 bucks or many places will lend them out free for a deposit until you return the unit. To hell with the rip off artists!!

I had a similar problem. As stated above, it's going into limp home mode.

Dealer found problem to be bad valve body in transmission...replaced under warranty (car has 40K). Dealer had car for a couple of weeks due to needing the part from Germany.

Thanks SSM. I have not lived in the US since 2001, so I'm out of touch as to who offers what.

Finding an A/Z that has one that's working...or someone that actually knows how to use it is often easier said than done.

Fortunately there are many things that trigger limp mode. Let's hope it's not a valve body!!!

most likely you have a oil leak down to the tcu causing the problem.

I've had this problem before, the dealer said it was a leak into the tranny computer I don't know, it took 2 weeks to fix because they had to order a new computer from Germany.

Yep - that's what Frank is talking about. I'm amazed that a part like that has to come from Germany. The valve body I can MAYBE understand. I think we are spoiled here with the plant in East London.

yup, my TCU was ordered and sent from Germany last time as well. MBUSA only keep profitable parts in stock most of the time. i.e. the front plastic fender liner. you be surprised how many dealers have tons of these in stock all the time. spoilers, etc.

Problem resolved

Well I am sorry to hear some of u guys had a 'leak'...I actually know my mechanic and he told me that the problem was that when they made those cars in 2002 they told ppl not to service those trannies but it the made a newer model with a 6 speed and told ppl to have them service. After the long song and dance he added two quarts of tran oil and everything seems to be ok. He also wants to replace my MAF...but he will let me knowabout all that later...hmm I will look for a DIY on replacing the MAF.

It's amazing how often problems related to transmission are related to too much fluid or too little fluid. If it required two quarts - where did the fluid go? You must have a leak & better find it. Re MAF - check codes - clean MAF - only replace if necessary.

BTW the 5 speed auto was replaced by the 7 G tronic - a 7 speed not 6 speed

The most common leak point is a plug o ring seal. Early Cs came with an o ring that deteriorated with use and leaked. The oil migrated up the wiring harness to the TCU (passenger floorboard). There's a DIY at http://www.installuniversity.com/mb/...ans_oring.html

Yep - I made a pdf of that a long time ago. All I'm saying is that you will have a very obvious leak which is confirmed in the DIY. 2 quarts makes a real mess so maccooper79 should be able to see it.

You wouldn't see it unless you lift the carpeting and open a trap door to access the TCU. The fluid leaks from around the plug, travels across and up the wire loom to the TCU. If left alone in that condition eventually it will blow the TCU. Big $$. I haven't seen this failure, just read about it. There is a TSB that covers it. Even if your car is not within the TSB vin range it would be a good idea to check it out...that fluid had to go somewhere. 2 quarts over time would have filled the tray beneath the trans and spilled out onto your floor.

well I also think there is the possibility that the mechanic might be blowing a lil smoke up the **** as well...since he couldnt find anything else wrong with the car and it didnt stall out on him at all...I still think it may be a lil jumpy when shifting down from second to first...the MAF sensor was supposed to be replaced awhile ago though...have noticed the car is less fuel effecient lately.

Pull off the airbox. Unplug & remove the MAF. Buy a can of MAF cleaner - follow directions & clean it.
