Not even close... either you misunderstood what someone was saying, or they were yanking your antlers.

The displacement is the swept volume of the cylinders, as in the volume the pistons displace as they travel through their stroke. Quite simple to figure out, it's (pi )* (bore^2)/4 * (stroke )* (number of cylinders).

Compression ratio has nothing to do with calculating displacement.

You can check out the MB site in England. It lists all three versions of the 1.8 ltr engine and the corresponding specs. MB is phasing out the 2.3 with the 1.8.
