Hey all,
I did a STFF but came up with nothing pertaining to my problem. Last year my parking brake assembly came off in the middle of driving and stopped the car from 40 mph. What happened is one of the 3 springs broke off and the wierd shaped plate lever that controls the shoe was flying all around and getting jammed. I got really scared but was able to remove it along with the broken spring in a Walgreens parking lot with a ratchet set bought from there (lol). Anyways there happened to be a German auto shop a few blocks away surprisingly and I the head mechanic was very friendly and took me to his computer to identify which spring it was on the diagram. I pointed to the one but apparantly I learned that after I got back that that wasn't the right one.

Does anyone have a diagram on the parking brake assembly so that I can find the part number for that as well as fitting everything in properly? Thanks alot in advance. My inspection sticker ran out 2 days ago and I don't think I'll pass with one non-functioning parking brake.

Let me know if you know which one it is. The spring is number 30 which the part number is A 202 993 20 10

Glyn you are absolutely right. I only noticed the foot brake and spring part and automatically thought the actual foot brake.

From my investigation the 3 springs that you are talking about are:

#160 _ Spring-Brake Pad to Cover Plate _ Part# A 201 423 05 92
#170 _ Spring-Brake Shoe Pull Back _ Part# A 210 423 00 92
#180 _ Spring-Brake Shoe Pull Back _ Part# A 201 423 06 92 BUT is replaced by Part# 171 423 00 92

Hope this helps. Maybe you can check to see if you have the right springs. But those are the only springs and they are only 3.

Thanks to both of you guys, I think I ordered 170 last time at the shop and it was the wrong one. The strange part about it is I don't see the plate lever that came off of mine, its about 2 and a half inches long too. I'll open it up in a few hours and will post pics in case anyone needs help later. Best part about it is that these springs are about $2 a piece.

Ok I've come across a problem, I figured out the right spring, 180. However I need a new lever mechanism since the old one got bent from the incident and I don't have the pin either which I'm about to head out to get. In order to install it, I need to remove the hub bolt. I have no idea how much of pain it will be to get off, but is it ok to remove the 16 spoke strange big bolt on the end? I need clearance to install the lever.

You can remove that castelated shaft nut - no probs. You are going to have to find a torque spec for it. Sorry - I don't have.

I know this is an old post, but was just reading though --

According to the Haynes (w203) manual you should not have to remove the hub. Once you remove the brake shoes you should be able to swivel the expanding lock out from the hub assembly and then remove the pin.
