recommended oil

My 2003 c240 is about 82,000 miles. Which oil should I use? 5w30 (full synthetic), 10w-30(full sythetic-high mileage), any other suggestions. I just got my valve gaskets replaced last week.

Oil that meets 229.5 specifications, my preference is Mobil 1 0W-40 European Car Formula fully synthetic. This has been discussed 500,000 times. Search, please.

The oils you mentioned are not approved for your car. You need to get what LILBENZ specified. SEARCH the forum!

229.5 spec oils can be found here http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevoli...nt_action=show. most readily available 229.5 oils are mobil1 0w40 and castrol syntec 0w30 aka german castrol. mobil1 0w40 can be found at almost any autoparts store, whereas castrol syntec 0w30 can be found at autozone. also napa has recently started to carry liqui moly oils, and i think they carry a couple that meet 229.5 spec, but they are more expensive then mobil and castrol.
ohh, i almost forgot to mention to use fleece oil filter since paper filter seems to be taboo around here

Yes - the other grades of Mobil 1 fail HTHS (high temperature high shear) - You must use the fleece filter

229.51 is for passenger car diesel only.

With the wide availability and decent price of the Mobil 1 0W-40 that Benz recommends, meets 229.5 standards, etc - why is it that people are ALWAYS looking to use something else? I don't understand that about humans. The perfect oil for the car is all around them, readily available and they want to go out of their way to use something different - ordering it from the internet or simply paying more for something that isn't even approved.

What's so hard to understand, guys? Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic. It says "European Car Formula" on the bottle. On the back it says "Meets MB 229.5 approval" or something equivalent.

I totally agree with you.

Many people use XXX or YYY thinking is even better than OEM. I guess it's like moding their cars. They don't want to be the same as the other C in the lot.

People get their panties in a wad really fast if someone mentions using 87 octane in a C230 when the only approved fuel is 91 or higher. It's amazing how such extreme attitudes don't exist about the oil, which is even more important as the car has no way of compensating.

Want to be different? Use diesel in your C230K.

Agree. Why waste time and possibly money for something that might not work or could cause long term damage when Mobil 1 0-40 Euro formula is easily avaiable and somewhat affordable almost anywhere here.

From maintenance MB engine from 1998-2003

I believe 229.5 oil recommendation replaced 229.3 - thus, 229.5 is fine for use in ALL W203s but 229.3 is only for the earlier ones.

I am currently using AMS oil 5w-40 european formula. I've been using it for 15,000 miles now. So far its good...car is c240 2003 model m112 engine. i get 24-25 miles to a gallon using this oil. I use to use AMS oil 5w-30 i get 26-29 miles per gallon since my car is 50,000 miles and its kinda oil, i switched to higher viscosity

^ Yes, AMSOIL Euro Formula is 229.5 approved. Every Jiffylube stocks them and its the only recommended oil they use for MB's.
