Lug Bolt size for spare (steel) wheel
 

Hi,

My '07 C280 manual states that I should use shorter lug bolts with the spare (steel) wheel/tire. But the manual doesn't state the length of the shorter lug bolt. AutohausAZ sells the lug bolts in 3 lengths
2 1/2" lug bolts - for alloy wheels (this is what I currently have on the car)
2" lug bolts - what about this one?
1 1/2" lug bolts - is this what I should be using with the steel wheel?

The shorter one! Use the short one for the spare if you have to change your tire temporarily.

I F***ed up my parking brake by putting the original bolts with the spare, and forced it by putting it in drive.

Save yourself $50 and use the short nuts.

The longest ones are for the original rims.

Just watch out, buy one and see what happens just to be sure.

Thanks for the feedback. As you suggested, I will buy one and try it; it it fits right, I buy the remaining 4 bolts.

The ones on the left I know for a fact those are on the stock wheel.

Its one of the other 2 bolts that are for the spare. I'm leaning towards the one in the middle..

I am copy/pasting the following from the owner's manual. Based on the picture, in the owner's manual, I think the correct one is the shortest one. If you look closely at the picture from the manual, except the head, entire length of the bolt has threads.

The shorter lug bolt shown in the owner's manual resembles closest to the shortest lug bolt from Autohaus...

I can go out and measure for sure, but I'm fairly certain the bolt on the far right is the correct one for the spare. Are you missing your bolts? There should be 5 short bolts that are in a plastic package in the spare tire.

e1000, I bought the car 2 months ago and I looked for the bolts for the spare tire - checked inside the spare tire all the compartments... bolts are missing.

I would appreciate it if you can confirm the actual length (one and half inch or 2 inch) of the spare tire lug bolt. Thanks.

AutohausAZ lists the middle one (two inches long bolt) for this car... not sure why.

I need to check these in my car...........if they are there or not.......if not then this thread might help me as well.......keep it going PCY.........

the spare is definately one of the two on the right, hopefully e1000 can correct all of us as soon as he gots the info :y

You are in good hands with Eric. Please check for rotation after fitting the steel spare. You can really foul up the parking brake with long bolts.

Well, I hope you didn't order those bolts.

The spare tire bolts have a shank length of .75"

Here you go, found some on ebay for you, this is the original packaging too, and it fits on the inside of the spare.

Eric, thanks for the info. You mentioned the shank length - I guess that's what is most important part. Do you happen to know the total length of the bolt (including the head)?

There lug bolts aren't that expensive; however, I'd hate to order the wrong ones and waste the bolts.

All the measurements you see above should be shank length not overall bolt length. Not sure what the total length is, just measure the bolt head you have and add .75" and it should be close.

Just buy the bolts from the ebay link i posted, those are absolutely the correct bolts.

For the closure of this thread as well as for the benefit of others, I will update this thread with the actual length of the lug bolt after I buy a set of the lug bolts.

I recently purchased a set for my spare Steel RIM in the trunk 2001 C240 locally in Memphis from the dealership. Part # 203-580-00-10 and the cost with tax was $14.00. I hope this can helps as well. Thanks for all the info on this site!

Mercedes C-class (W203) have two bolt sizes:
-long- M12x1.5 thread, R12 ball seat, 39.9 mm shank, 17 mm Hex (for OEM alloy wheels)
-short- M12x1.5 thread, R12 ball seat, 20.6 mm shank (for winter "steelies")

Spare wheels use short lugs,... the stock lugs in trunk has a bit of a hollow hex in bolt but otherwise exact same dimension as short for winter "steelies"

Correct, I did compare the lugs from the dealer with the one i had in my trunk. It was a match. I had them look up the bolts by VIN # for the steel spare wheel lug nuts. I plan on putting the steel spare on the car after work.

All of which would be unnecessary, of course, if you did the sensible thing and converted to studs. :)

Need help. Have a 2017 E300 4Matic. Switching out run flats for non RFT. Only one dealer would order the compact spare tire and rim for me: part #213-400-06-00. It came today from Germany.
Problem is the lug nuts for the spare. My dealer said nothing was available because my VIN did not match with any lug nuts or spare; but, what I got today will fit.

Does anyone have any ideas? The OEM lug nuts for each run flat has a thread size M14 x 1.5, 28mm.
