SAM Module

I have a 2001 C240, my battery died so I boosted it and the
ESP "not working" light came on. I parked it overnight and the next day I boosted again but now
-ESP" not working" and
-ESP malfunction and
- BAS light came on.
I took to the Mercedes dealer, they changed the battery and told me I need a SAM module also. I took the car with out changing the SAM and my wipers, turn signals, door locks, gas gauge don't work. Does anyone have any idea. I went in for a battery change and now I need a module...I don't get it!

The 2001 SAMs are very fragile. You blew it by jump starting (boosting) the car. You have to be very careful with this even on newer cars. No option but a new SAM.

Good luck!

This happened to me a few years back... had mb roadside come out and install my battery... The tech swapped out my battery and ended up frying my SAM (i believe its the rear)... I had the same exact issues you state... Then they charged me for a new SAM plus labor.....

Today I actually went and bought a new battery from the dealer... i was nervous during installation because I did not want to repeat what happened before... Installation went okay except some how i triggered the car alarm when removing the + and -. Alarm keep on going off even after I completely removed the battery. But once I installed the new battery I was able to disable the alarm with my key.....

bottom line... you need a new sam... its probably a really easy DIY... I think its located in the trunk on the left side..

good luck

The best way to change a Benz battery is to keep the car powered up with a quiescent current device.

I followed the owners manual step by step on boosting the car. Maybe they did burn out the SAM at the dealership. I have no way to prove it. Thanks all for the replies.

Yep! - owners manual jump starts never worked on early cars. The SAMs did not even like being powered down. The fact that you got an ESP/BAS light after boosting is a sure sign.

next time, just take out the battery and take it to autozone or kragen. They'll recharge it for free. Usually takes about an hr and just reinstall. I did this a few times before i did my seat control module fix.
