See if your cabin filter is dirty (some cars are equipped with charcoal filters to absorb odors). Before switching off AC, run fan on high for few minutes - moisture may be helping the bacteria buildup in the AC ducts. By turning up the fan (without AC), the idea is to get rid of the moisture in the ducts.

Common problem. Bacteria growing on the evapourator. Spray with Lysol or the dealers have a spray. You must kill the stuff or it will stink. Get used to running your HVAC on hot for a few minutes before you shut down.
