Question CD Changer Retrofit

I never liked CD changers but the radio is all talk now....so I decided to get one. I didn't get one originally because as it could be put in later, I didnt want to finance it.

Now, last year it was $1100...this year its $400. I've heard and read that dealers will retrofit it for $400 now plus labor but the two dealers in Houston told me $1100. Am I getting screwed or should I pay it?

I don't want to get one off e-bay and only want the dealer to install....and I definitely don't want aftermarket. The MB CD Changer is my only option, just wondering if its possible for me to get it for the $400 rather than the $1100.

Thanks

www.autoclass.net has them for about 400$, plus the price of a fiber optic cable, you really don't need the bracket, I would just use heavy duty velcro since it sits on a shelf.

Have a local stereo shop install it. The ones near me charge $40 to $55. The dealer charges 2.5 hours at $95 per hour.

So if I buy it from that website and get just any place to install it will it affect the warranty on the car, or the warranty on the CD changer?

And, honestly, do you believe that a place other than the dealer is reliable enough to do it right? Is the risk worth saving 100 bucks?

For over a grand the CD changer is looking less appealing.

I bought mine from autoclass for around $460 including bracket and cable. Then I had the dealer installed it for $160. Warranty will not be affected.

OK, this is a shameless plug, but assuming all goes well on Friday, I'm selling mine and the bracket for $200. It's a year old and works great.

If you want a new one, try www.autoclass.com It's about $460 with everything.

To install it yourself, try search for directions on this board. Search under "Pete" There are good directions there.

Hey Galaxy,

If you can confirm that if I bought yours and had it installed (whether on my own, some place, or the dealer) that it would not affect the warranty would not be voided on the car or CD changer I would definitely be interested.

You know, I don't know about the warrenty stuff, but I'll PM Lynn, he knows everything and see if he has any idea. The CD changer does not have any warrenty left because I bought from www.autoclass.net and you only get a year which just passed in March.

I'll let you know what Lynn thinks.

No one can verify your warranty coverage over here. It is up to the dealer that does the installation. So you need to call your advisor and ask about it. For my case, they said it's a OEM changer installed by them so the warranty will be intact.

Becker Option

As usual, I'm a little late to the party. I was looking into the same thing myself, but $1100 for the changer is just highway robbery. You have a second option, the Becker Silverstone 2662 model, which is identical to the MB changer with Becker's label instead of the star.

There's only one Becker dealer where I live and they gave me a quote of $700 installed, because the glove-box mount is kind of labor intensive. Supposedly it won't void the warranty on the electrical since it's a plug-and-play type adaptor, but if you get rattles from the dash I can guarantee that your dealer will charge you to fix it or tell you tough luck. In my case, this shop only does high-end autos so I'd feel comfortable with the install.

In the end, I managered to rig the cassette adapter to the cassette deck and use it with my iPod, which for me is a much more convenient option since I now have the equivalent of a 100-disc player in the car! True, can't use the multi-function controls with it, but I'm willing to sacrifice a little convenience to save a grand. (That puts me half-way to my bi-xenons. )
